PM Modi, Japan PM Sanae Takaichi Inaugurate Maruti Suzuki’s Advanced Kharkhoda Manufacturing Plant
New Delhi, July 2026 : Maruti Suzuki India on Thursday inaugurated its state-of-the-art automobile manufacturing facility at IMT Kharkhoda in Haryana, marking a major milestone in the company’s expansion and underscoring the growing strategic partnership between India and Japan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi jointly dedicated the facility to the nation through video conferencing during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum held in New Delhi.
Spread over 800 acres, the integrated manufacturing complex has been developed along with a dedicated supplier park and is designed to become one of the world’s largest automobile production hubs once fully operational. The new facility begins operations with an annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles, which will be expanded to one million vehicles in the next phase.
Maruti Suzuki plans to invest Rs 35,000 crore in the Kharkhoda project, which is expected to create more than 21,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities after its completion. The plant will play a crucial role in strengthening the company’s manufacturing capabilities and supporting India’s emergence as a global automotive production hub.
Built on Suzuki’s ‘Smart Factory’ concept, the facility incorporates advanced Industry 5.0 technologies aimed at improving manufacturing efficiency, workplace safety, product quality and overall productivity. Automation, digital connectivity and intelligent manufacturing systems have been integrated throughout the plant to enhance operational excellence while ensuring flexibility for future production requirements.
Sustainability has also been placed at the core of the project. The Kharkhoda facility incorporates renewable energy solutions, including solar power generation, biogas systems, battery energy storage and green power procurement. Maruti Suzuki said the plant’s entire electricity requirement will eventually be met through renewable energy sources, reinforcing its commitment to environmentally responsible manufacturing and India’s clean energy goals.
The inauguration represents another significant chapter in Maruti Suzuki’s four-decade presence in India and highlights the success of economic cooperation between India and Japan. Once the Kharkhoda facility reaches its full capacity of one million vehicles annually, it will become a key contributor to Maruti Suzuki’s target of achieving an overall annual production capacity of four million vehicles across its manufacturing network.
Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki described the project as a landmark achievement for the company, saying it was a matter of great honour that the group’s most technologically advanced manufacturing facility had been inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi.
He said the planned expansion from 500,000 to one million vehicles annually would establish Kharkhoda among the largest automobile manufacturing facilities in the world. According to Suzuki, the project reflects the strength of the India-Japan partnership as well as the success of the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
He added that the supportive policy environment created by the Modi government has encouraged Suzuki to accelerate investments in India while expanding employment, exports, localisation and technology development.
Highlighting India’s growing importance within Suzuki’s global operations, Toshihiro Suzuki noted that the company’s first battery electric vehicle, the e VITARA, is being manufactured exclusively at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility for export to nearly 100 countries, further reinforcing India’s role as a global production and export hub for next-generation mobility solutions.
