Sourav Ganguly Set for ICC Hall of Fame Induction, Calls It a ‘Huge Honour’

New Delhi, July 2026 : Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is set to receive one of cricket’s highest honours after being named the latest inductee into the prestigious ICC Hall of Fame. The recognition comes on the day Ganguly celebrated his 54th birthday, making the occasion even more memorable for one of India’s most influential cricketing figures.

Expressing his gratitude, Ganguly thanked the International Cricket Council (ICC) and ICC Chairman Jay Shah for the honour, describing the induction as a proud moment in his career. He said it was a privilege to join an elite list of cricketing legends who have shaped the game across generations.

Taking to social media platform X, Ganguly wrote, “Thank you ICC and Chairman Jay Shah for inducting me into the Hall of Fame. It’s a huge honour. One of the 10 Indians to be inducted into the Hall of Fame ever. Amazing to be a part of some great names.”

With this recognition, Ganguly will become the 12th Indian overall and the 10th Indian male cricketer to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the country’s greatest cricketers and captains.

Widely regarded as one of the finest One-Day International batters in cricket history, Ganguly enjoyed an illustrious international career spanning more than a decade. He scored 11,363 runs in 311 ODIs, including 22 centuries, while also contributing with the ball by claiming 132 wickets. In Test cricket, the stylish left-hander amassed 7,212 runs in 113 matches, establishing himself as one of India’s most dependable batters.

Fondly known as the ‘God of the Off-Side’ for his elegant stroke play through the cover region, Ganguly’s greatest contribution arguably came as captain. He took over the leadership of the Indian team in 2000 at a time when Indian cricket was reeling from the match-fixing scandal. Under his leadership, the team underwent a dramatic transformation, developing a fearless and aggressive approach that laid the foundation for India’s future success.

Ganguly inspired India to several memorable achievements, including the thrilling 2001 Test victory over Australia at Eden Gardens, the 2002 NatWest Trophy triumph at Lord’s, and a shared ICC Champions Trophy title in 2002. He also guided India to the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup final and led the team to a historic Test series victory in Pakistan in 2004, reinforcing India’s reputation as a formidable side overseas.

Following his retirement from international cricket, Ganguly continued to serve the sport in administrative and coaching roles. As President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he steered Indian cricket through the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He currently serves as the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), is the Director of Cricket for Delhi Capitals in both the IPL and Women’s Premier League, and is also the head coach of Pretoria Capitals in South Africa’s SA20 league.

The ICC is expected to formally announce the latest Hall of Fame inductees on July 11 at the conclusion of its annual conference in Edinburgh. Ganguly will join an illustrious list of Indian cricket legends already honoured by the ICC, including Bishan Singh Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Vinoo Mankad, Diana Edulji, Virender Sehwag, Neetu David, and MS Dhoni.

The Hall of Fame induction marks another milestone in Ganguly’s remarkable journey—from an elegant left-handed batter and transformational captain to one of the most respected administrators in world cricket. His influence on Indian cricket, both on and off the field, continues to inspire generations of players and fans alike.
