England Crush India by 56 Runs, Complete 4-0 T20I Whitewash as Buttler’s 131 Powers Hosts to World No. 1

Southampton, July 2026 : A vintage century from Jos Buttler and a blistering unbeaten knock by captain Harry Brook powered England to a comprehensive 56-run victory over India in the fifth and final T20I at The Rose Bowl on Saturday, sealing a 4-0 series whitewash and propelling the hosts to the top of the ICC T20I rankings.

The opening match of the series had been washed out due to rain, but England dominated the remaining four games, exposing the inexperience of Shreyas Iyer-led India’s young side. The defeat also comes on the heels of India’s recent T20I series loss to Ireland, raising fresh concerns ahead of future international assignments.

After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first, a decision that proved disastrous as England’s batting lineup produced a breathtaking display of power-hitting. Buttler smashed his second T20I century and first international hundred in three years, scoring a sensational 131 off 64 balls, laced with 12 fours and eight sixes.

Brook provided the perfect support with a scintillating unbeaten 95 off 45 deliveries, hammering four boundaries and eight sixes. Together, the pair stitched an England-record 233-run partnership for the second wicket in T20 Internationals, guiding the hosts to a formidable 257/3 in 20 overs, their second-highest T20I total.

England had suffered an early setback when opener Phil Salt departed for six, but that proved to be India’s only success for most of the innings. Brook survived an early reprieve after being dropped on three by Shivam Dube and made the visitors pay heavily with fearless stroke play. Buttler, meanwhile, reached his century in just 51 balls, bringing up the milestone with a towering six off Axar Patel before eventually falling for 131 in the 19th over.

India’s bowling lacked penetration throughout the innings. Prince Yadav conceded 60 runs in his four overs, while Axar Patel endured one of the most expensive spells of his T20 career, leaking 63 runs. Shivam Dube claimed two late wickets, but England’s batters had already inflicted irreparable damage.

Chasing a daunting target of 258, India never looked in contention despite a few fighting performances. Abhishek Sharma was dismissed cheaply for three, putting the visitors under immediate pressure.

Sanju Samson, who replaced teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after the 15-year-old was left out of the playing XI following India’s delayed arrival at the ground due to traffic, played a brisk knock of 27, including two sixes, before falling to Sam Curran.

Captain Shreyas Iyer attempted to rebuild the innings with 28, adding a useful partnership with Ishan Kishan, who top-scored with 56 off 35 balls. Kishan reached his half-century but was dismissed after a superb running catch by Phil Salt off Adil Rashid, effectively ending India’s slim hopes of staging a remarkable chase.

Tilak Varma continued his impressive form with an aggressive 53 off just 25 deliveries, but wickets kept falling at regular intervals, preventing India from building sustained momentum. England wicketkeeper Buttler capped a memorable evening by taking three catches behind the stumps.

Left-arm seamer Sam Curran was England’s standout bowler, finishing with 3/36, while veteran leg-spinner Adil Rashid claimed two important wickets. Liam Dawson also made a key breakthrough by dismissing Iyer as England maintained complete control throughout the chase.

India eventually finished on 201/8 in 20 overs, falling well short of the target as England celebrated another dominant performance.

The two teams will now shift focus to the three-match ODI series, beginning in Birmingham on July 14, with the series expected to be one of the final appearances in England for batting legend Virat Kohli, who has already retired from Test and T20I cricket.

Brief Scores: England 257/3 in 20 overs (Jos Buttler 131, Harry Brook 95*; Shivam Dube 2/22) beat India 201/8 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 56, Tilak Varma 53; Sam Curran 3/36, Adil Rashid 2 wickets) by 56 runs.
