England Past Norway 2-1 After Extra Time, Into World Cup Semi-finals
Score: England 2 (Jude Bellingham 45+2′, 93′) beat Norway 1 (Andreas Schjelderup 36′) after extra time
Miami, July 2026 : Jude Bellingham once again proved to be England’s match-winner, scoring twice as the Three Lions fought back from a goal down to defeat Norway 2-1 after extra time in a thrilling FIFA World Cup quarter-final on Sunday. The victory ended Norway’s historic campaign and secured England a place in the World Cup semi-finals for the fourth time in their history.
Norway, appearing in their first-ever World Cup quarter-final after previous last-16 finishes in 1938 and 1998, stunned England by taking the lead in the 36th minute through Andreas Schjelderup. The winger’s dangerous cross-shot evaded everyone before finding the far corner, capping an impressive first-half display by the Scandinavian side in the sweltering Miami heat.
England had struggled to cope with Norway’s attacking intent early on. Erling Haaland had already tested goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with a header before Schjelderup’s opener rewarded Norway’s positive start.
However, Thomas Tuchel’s men responded at the perfect moment. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Bellingham surged forward with one of his trademark driving runs before calmly finishing to level the scores at 1-1. Moments later, Harry Kane thought he had put England ahead, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
The second half remained fiercely contested. Norway believed they had regained the lead when Torbjorn Heggem scored from a corner, but a VAR review disallowed the goal after officials spotted a foul by Haaland on Elliot Anderson in the build-up.
England survived another anxious moment when Kristoffer Ajer struck the crossbar with a powerful header, while Djed Spence nearly capitalised on a hurried clearance by Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland as the match headed into extra time.
Just three minutes into the additional period, England found the decisive breakthrough. Substitute Morgan Rogers unleashed a fierce shot that Nyland failed to hold, and Bellingham reacted quickest to tap home the rebound, completing his second match-winning brace of the tournament.
The victory underlined Bellingham’s growing reputation as one of world football’s brightest stars. Having also scored twice in England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16, the midfielder became the first England player to score two or more goals in multiple World Cup knockout matches during a single tournament.
Bellingham now has six goals at the 2026 World Cup, drawing level with captain Harry Kane as England’s joint-leading scorer in the competition. It also marks the first time two England players have scored at least five goals in the same World Cup campaign.
The 22-year-old has now scored seven World Cup goals before turning 24, equalling Brazilian legend Pelé, with only Kylian Mbappe’s 12 surpassing that tally at the same age. His latest strike also matched Gary Lineker’s record for the most non-penalty goals by an England player at a single major tournament.
For Norway, the defeat brought an end to a memorable World Cup run. Haaland, who had scored in each of his previous four appearances at the tournament, was unable to extend his remarkable streak. The striker managed only two shots in 105 minutes, while his run of 14 consecutive competitive matches with a goal for Norway also came to an end.
England have now won four of their last six major tournament knockout matches that have gone to extra time and, after overturning another deficit, will head to Atlanta for a blockbuster semi-final against either Argentina or Switzerland as they continue their quest to reach a first World Cup final in 60 years.
