US Says It Intercepted Iranian Ballistic Missiles Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

Washington, July 2026 : The United States military on Tuesday claimed it successfully intercepted multiple ballistic missiles launched from Iran in what it described as an attempted “surprise attack” targeting American forces stationed in the Middle East, further escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the missiles were launched by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) at around 5:45 p.m. Eastern Time.

“Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on U.S. forces based in the Middle East. All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted,” CENTCOM said.

The command added that US forces across the region remain on high alert and are maintaining a heightened state of operational readiness in view of the evolving security situation.

According to a CNN report citing a US official, Iran fired no more than four ballistic missiles, all of which were intercepted before reaching their intended targets. No casualties or damage were immediately reported.

Iran had not issued an official response to the US claims at the time of publication.

The reported missile launch came amid rapidly rising military tensions in the region. Earlier in the day, CENTCOM announced that the US military had intensified enforcement of its naval blockade against Iranian ports.

According to the command, American forces redirected 18 commercial vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, disabled two vessels and boarded another two ships as part of efforts to enforce restrictions on maritime traffic linked to Iran.

CENTCOM also revealed that more than 20 US Navy warships are currently deployed across the Middle East in support of ongoing military operations and maritime security missions.

“There are more than 20 U.S. Navy warships operating across the Middle East supporting military missions, including strict enforcement of America’s steel wall blockade against Iran,” the command stated.

The latest measures follow a similar announcement made on July 26, when CENTCOM said the naval blockade remained fully operational. At that time, it reported redirecting 12 commercial vessels, disabling two ships that allegedly failed to comply with instructions and boarding another two vessels to ensure enforcement.

The latest exchange comes only hours after US President Donald Trump met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House for high-level talks. The meeting marked their first face-to-face discussion since the United States and Israel jointly launched military strikes against Iran on February 28.

Although President Trump said on Monday that he had decided to temporarily pause further US military strikes to allow diplomacy another opportunity, he warned that Washington remained prepared to launch additional military action if negotiations with Tehran failed.

The reported missile interceptions and the continued military deployments underscore the fragile security situation in the Middle East, where diplomatic efforts are unfolding alongside an increasingly visible military build-up by both the United States and Iran.
