Sreeshankar Wins Silver in Long Jump at Commonwealth Games

Glasgow, July 2026 : India’s Murali Sreeshankar produced another impressive performance on the Commonwealth Games stage, winning the silver medal in the men’s long jump with a best effort of 8.09 metres in a closely contested final on Wednesday night.

The 27-year-old Indian athlete, who hails from Palakkad in Kerala and is coached by his father S. Murali, made a strong start to the competition. He opened with a jump of 8.03m before producing his best effort of 8.09m in the second round. Despite recording two fouls later in the event, Sreeshankar maintained his position among the leading contenders and successfully secured the silver medal.

He registered 7.94m and 7.97m with his final two attempts, but his second-round effort was enough to keep him on the podium in a high-quality final.

Jamaica’s 2019 World Champion Tajay Gayle clinched the gold medal with a winning leap of 8.15m. Scotland’s Stephen Mackenzie claimed the bronze with an effort of 8.08m, finishing just one centimetre behind Sreeshankar in a thrilling battle for the medals.

The silver medal also continued Sreeshankar’s strong record at the Commonwealth Games. At the Birmingham 2022 edition, he had won silver with a jump of 8.08m, becoming the first Indian male long jumper to win a silver medal at the Games.

His latest podium finish further enhances his reputation as one of India’s most consistent athletes in the long jump and adds another major international achievement to his career.

India also had another representative in the long jump final, with Lokesh Sathyanathan finishing fifth. He recorded a best effort of 7.97m, contributing to India’s strong overall showing in the discipline.

The Glasgow final featured intense competition, with four athletes managing to cross the eight-metre mark. Sreeshankar’s 8.09m eventually proved sufficient for the silver as he maintained his composure through the later rounds despite the pressure of a closely fought contest.

The medal took India’s overall Commonwealth Games tally to 13, comprising two gold, eight silver and three bronze medals. In athletics and para-athletics combined, India have so far secured five medals, including one gold, three silver and one bronze.

Sreeshankar’s silver has provided another significant boost to India’s athletics campaign in Glasgow. His ability to consistently perform on the biggest international stages once again underlined his quality and determination, while his back-to-back Commonwealth Games silver medals cement his status as one of India’s leading long jumpers.
