India Eyes More Medals as Weightlifting, Athletics Take Centre Stage in Glasgow

Glasgow, July 2026 : India will look to add to its impressive medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Thursday, with a packed schedule across weightlifting, athletics, cycling, lawn bowls and para track cycling. Weightlifters Martina Devi Maibam and Lovepreet Singh will be among the key medal contenders, while several Indian athletes will also be aiming to qualify for finals and secure podium finishes.

India has so far won seven medals in weightlifting, including one gold and five silver medals, and expectations will be high as Martina competes in the women’s 86kg final and Lovepreet takes the field in the men’s 110kg category.

Martina Devi Maibam will begin India’s medal hunt in weightlifting when the women’s 86kg final gets underway at 6:30 pm IST. Later in the evening, Lovepreet Singh will compete in the men’s 110kg final at 11:00 pm IST, giving India another opportunity to add to its weightlifting haul.

Athletics will also command significant attention throughout the day. Parul Chaudhary, who has enjoyed success at the Asian Games, will compete in the women’s 5000m at 1:48 am IST on Friday. The distance runner, who is also scheduled to compete in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, will be hoping to claim her maiden Commonwealth Games medal.

In the women’s discus throw final at 1:10 am IST, Nidhi Rani and Seema will also be in action, looking to add another medal to India’s athletics tally. The men’s shot put final will feature Samardeep Singh Gill and Tajinderpal Singh Toor at 11:30 pm IST.

India’s athletics campaign will begin earlier in the afternoon. Tejaswin Shankar will be involved in several events of the men’s decathlon, beginning with the 100m at 2:47 pm, followed by the long jump at 3:20 pm, shot put at 5:10 pm, high jump at 11:38 pm and 400m at 1:38 am.

In the men’s javelin throw qualifying round at 2:55 pm, Yash Vir Singh, Rohit Yadav and Neeraj Chopra will take the field. The men’s triple jump qualifying round at 4:55 pm will feature Selva Prabhu T and Praveen Chithravel.

Indian sprinter Vishal T K will compete in the men’s 400m semifinal at 5:40 pm, while Animesh Kujur will contest the men’s 200m semifinal at 11:43 pm.

Cycling will provide another opportunity for India to reach the medal rounds. Lisha Das will compete in the women’s C4-C5 4000m individual pursuit qualifying round in para track cycling at 4:06 pm. If she qualifies, her bronze medal race is scheduled for 9:44 pm, followed by the gold medal race at 9:51 pm.

The men’s track cycling team sprint qualifying round will take place at 5:07 pm, with Rojit Singh Yanglem, David Beckham Elkatohchoongo and Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam representing India, while Jemsh Singh Keithellakpam is listed as the reserve. Subject to qualification, the bronze medal match is scheduled for 10:50 pm, followed by the gold medal match at 10:55 pm.

India’s lawn bowls contingent will also be in action. Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar will compete in the men’s pairs sectional play at 7:30 pm, while Nayanmoni Saikia will contest the women’s singles sectional play at 8:55 pm.
