Women devotees are departing for Kashi carrying holy river water in a comfortable and secure environment.

Strict security arrangements have been made for women devotees of Shiva, with a female police force deployed.

Aapda Sakhis have also taken charge of the ghats and routes to assist women devotees of Shiva.

Prayagraj, August 2026 : Law and order and women’s safety are priorities for the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh. This is also visible during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra during the month of Shravan. The number of women devotees performing the Kanwar Yatra is steadily increasing. The safety and facilities of these women devotees have been given special priority.

Female police personnel deployed at the ghats

In compliance with the Yogi government’s directive to ensure a safe, smooth, and secure Kanwar Yatra for devotees during the holy month of Shravan, arrangements have been made in Prayagraj to ensure the safety and convenience of the pilgrims along the Yatra route, Kanwar camps, food distribution centers, and the pilgrimage sites. In view of the increasing number of female devotees carrying Kanwars in the Sangam city of Prayagraj, the administration has made special arrangements for them.
In Prayagraj, the largest number of female Kanwars leave for Kashi with water from the Dashashwamedh and Sangam Ghats. Prayagraj District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma stated that changing rooms and women’s assistance centers have been set up for female Shiva devotees at the Sangam and major ghats of the Ganga River. Squads of female police personnel are deployed at the ghats. 44 Aapda Sakhis of the Aajeevika Mission are also on standby to assist female Kanwars. Furthermore, female police and volunteers are deployed at key locations along the Kanwar Path between Prayagraj and Varanasi. Women security personnel are on alert at all major Shiva temples in the city, including Mankameshwar, Someshwar Mahadev, and Brahmeshwar Mahadev.

The long queues of women that used to form at Shiva temples during the month of Shravan to worship Lord Shiva are now being seen in the Kanwar Yatra as well. A large number of women devotees from small towns and villages are leaving their homes to embark on the Kanwar Yatra. Jyoti, who collected water from the Ganges River at Dashashwamedh Ghat in Daraganj, Prayagraj, and embarked on the Kanwar Yatra to Kashi, says that women are now safe on the way and fearless, which is why many women from her town, Bharwari, are also participating in the Kanwar Yatra.

Meera Devi of Sadiapur, along with eight family members, has also taken water from Dashashwamedh Ghat in Prayagraj and set out for the Baijnath Dham Kanwar Yatra. Meera Devi explains that three generations of her family are accompanying her on the Yatra this time. Her two daughters-in-law, a daughter and three granddaughters are also going with her. Apart from this, her son is also with her. Meera says that now there is no insecurity or inconvenience on the Kanwar routes. After the Yogi government came to power, women devotees of Shiva are safe everywhere. Rest camps for women devotees of Shiva have been set up at various places on the Kanwar route. Women are going on the Kanwar Yatra with full enthusiasm and joy, singing bhajans and kirtans of Bhole Baba in the group journey.
