Slipper Hurled at Pappu Yadav During Press Meet, MP Alleges Knife Attack Plot

New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Independent Lok Sabha MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, faced a security scare during a press interaction at his official residence in New Delhi on Sunday evening after a man allegedly hurled a slipper at him. The MP later claimed that another person attending the gathering had brought a knife with the intention of attacking him.

The incident took place at Yadav’s official residence on Pandara Road while the Purnia MP was interacting with journalists. The sudden disruption triggered a commotion among those present and raised concerns over security arrangements in the high-security area.

According to a supporter of the MP, the person who allegedly threw the slipper was identified as Sumit, a resident of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. Following the incident, supporters of Yadav reportedly caught hold of him and assaulted him before police intervened and detained him.

Sumit reportedly told those present that he was angry with Yadav over what he described as disrespectful remarks made by the MP about saints.

Jaid Khan, media convenor of Pappu Yadav, said the press conference was underway when three to four people began asking questions. He alleged that one of them suddenly threw a slipper at the MP.

“At the same time, one of them was seen pulling out a knife. Those standing nearby tried to overpower the man with the knife, sparking a commotion,” Khan said.

According to Khan, supporters became angry following the alleged attack and beat the person who threw the slipper. He added that Yadav himself intervened, shielded the man from further assault and handed him over to the police.

The incident comes amid heightened political controversy surrounding the MP. A day earlier, a police complaint had reportedly been filed against Yadav, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others in connection with a skit staged on Parliament premises concerning donations for the Ram Mandir.

Speaking after Sunday’s incident, Yadav alleged that he had been receiving threats from anti-social elements since raising the issue of alleged irregularities involving donations in Ayodhya.

The MP further claimed that a bounty of up to Rs 51 lakh had been offered for his killing following his remarks on the issue. However, the allegations regarding the alleged bounty and the knife incident were made by Yadav and his associates, and further investigation would be required to establish the circumstances.

Police detained the alleged slipper-thrower following the disturbance. The incident has nevertheless prompted questions about how an individual carrying a potentially dangerous weapon could gain access to a gathering being held at the residence of a sitting Member of P
