NIMS Performs 1,000 Robotic Surgeries in Under Three Years, Sets New Benchmark for Public Healthcare

Hyderabad, Aug 2026 : The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad has achieved a significant milestone by completing 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries in less than three years, setting a new benchmark for advanced public healthcare in India, the Telangana government said on Monday.

The achievement highlights NIMS’ efforts to integrate advanced surgical technology into public healthcare and make complex robotic procedures accessible to patients, including those from economically weaker sections who may otherwise be unable to afford such treatment.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who is also the President of the NIMS Governing Council, congratulated NIMS Director and Senior Professor of Urology and Renal Transplantation and Robotic Surgery Coordinator Dr Rahul Devraj, along with doctors, nurses, technicians and other healthcare personnel involved in the programme.

The Chief Minister described the milestone as a transformative development in public healthcare, saying the adoption of robotic technology had helped bring advanced surgical treatment within the reach of a wider section of society.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the achievement reflects NIMS’ focus on medical excellence, innovation and equitable access to healthcare.

The use of robotic-assisted technology has enabled surgeons to perform complex procedures with greater precision. It has also contributed to reduced postoperative pain and blood loss, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery for patients.

Of the 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries, the Department of Urology accounted for 590 procedures, followed by Surgical Gastroenterology with 248 and Surgical Oncology with 162.

The procedures covered a broad range of complex medical conditions, including urological, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, colorectal, gynaecological and oncological cases.

The Urology Department alone performed 590 robotic procedures involving patients across different age groups, ranging from one year to more than 80 years.

These procedures included complex cancer surgeries such as robotic radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer and radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. The department also undertook complex robotic renal transplantation procedures, uro-gynaecological surgeries and reconstructive procedures.

Among the advanced reconstructive surgeries performed were Boari flap procedures, ureteric reimplantation and pyeloplasties, including paediatric pyeloplasty.

A major feature of the programme has been its emphasis on affordability. More than 90 per cent of the 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries were provided free of cost under government-supported healthcare schemes, including Aarogyasri and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).

The Telangana government said this has enabled economically disadvantaged patients to access sophisticated robotic surgical care without bearing the substantial costs generally associated with such procedures.

Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha also congratulated the doctors, nurses, technicians and support staff at NIMS for achieving the milestone.

He said the achievement demonstrated the government’s commitment to ensuring that advanced medical services are accessible to ordinary citizens.

“As a testament to our government’s resolve to bring advanced medical services within the reach of the people, it is heartening that more than 90 per cent of these robotic surgeries have been provided free of cost through the Aarogyasri and CMRF schemes,” the Health Minister said.

He added that providing world-class medical services to every citizen remains a key objective of the Telangana government.

The milestone marks an important step in NIMS’ expansion of robotic surgery within the public healthcare system and demonstrates the potential for advanced medical technology to be integrated into government institutions while maintaining a strong focus on affordability and access.
