UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Condemns Hamas on Attack Anniversary

On October 7, marking the anniversary of a major Hamas assault on Israel, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a global denunciation of the group’s actions. The attack, which occurred one year ago, led to the deaths of over 1,250 people and the abduction of more than 250, including women and children.

Guterres expressed his solidarity with the victims and their families, urging the immediate and unconditional release of hostages still held in Gaza. He underscored the ongoing suffering caused by the conflict, which has impacted Palestinians in Gaza as well as communities in Lebanon.

The Secretary-General called on Hamas to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross access to the hostages to ensure their well-being. He appealed for an end to the violence and suffering in the region, advocating for peace, adherence to international law, and justice.

In response to Israel’s escalated operations in Lebanon, rockets from southern Lebanon struck the Israeli city of Haifa, injuring several people. This was a reaction to Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in Beirut, which caused significant damage.

Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to pursuing peace and urged the international community to honor the victims by working towards family reunifications and putting an end to violence in the Middle East.
