Pakistan Faces Political Tensions: Shehbaz Sharif vs PTI Amid Protests and SCO Summit
In Islamabad, political tensions are escalating between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as protests intensify. The PTI has accused the government of deflecting attention from its failures, asserting that the ruling party gained power through election manipulation. PTI spokespersons claim that citizens are demonstrating to safeguard democracy and protect their rights.
During a federal cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif criticized Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, accusing him of orchestrating the protests alongside Afghan nationals and government officials. Sharif stressed the importance of maintaining a peaceful environment, especially with the upcoming visit of the Chinese Premier, a key moment for potential investments. He compared the current protests to PTI’s 2014 sit-in, vowing to prevent a repeat of such disruptions.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also weighed in, warning that any attempts to disrupt the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, scheduled for October 15-16 in Islamabad, would be met with strict measures. He reassured that law enforcement agencies are on high alert to secure the event, given the presence of international delegations. Naqvi emphasized the summit’s importance for Pakistan’s global standing and diplomatic relations.
