Empowering Women: Combating Substance Abuse in Mizoram

Aizawl: Today at 10:00 AM, Minister Pi Lalrinpuii of Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs and Women & Child Development, along with representatives from the National Commission for Women and the Mizoram State Commission for Women, inaugurated the ‘Awareness Programme on Empowering Women: Combating Substance Abuse in Mizoram’ at the I&PR Auditorium in Aizawl.

During the program, Minister Pi Lalrinpuii emphasized the importance of addressing substance abuse issues affecting women in our state. She noted that women play a crucial role in our communities and highlighted the need for support systems that empower them. With Mizoram situated near the Golden Triangle, the prevalence of substance abuse poses significant challenges. She mentioned that the government is actively working to combat these issues through various initiatives, emphasizing the need for community awareness and engagement to address the problem effectively.

She expressed concern over the rising number of women affected by substance abuse, stating that it not only impacts their health but also their families. Furthermore, she acknowledged the importance of providing safe environments for women and highlighted the challenges they face in seeking help. The Minister also pointed out that empowering women is key to tackling substance abuse and improving community health.

The program featured an interactive session led by Pi K. Lalremruati, Interim Chairperson of the Mizoram State Commission for Women, who shared insights on the importance of support networks for women. Dr. Lalhriatzuali Ralte, IAS, Director of Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs, emphasized the need for comprehensive strategies to address the issue, stating that awareness campaigns are essential in educating women about the resources available to them.

In the technical session, various presentations were made on the challenges faced by women who use drugs. Pi Lalfakawmi, Coordinator of the Mizoram Social Defence & Rehabilitation Board, discussed the issues surrounding women drug users and the problems they face. Dr. Ruth Lalmuanpuii, Joint Director of the Directorate of Health and Medical Education, spoke about the biological and medical reasons behind women’s vulnerability to drug use and addiction. Finally, Pi Lalhlupuii Sailo, Chief Executive Officer of the Mizoram Social Defence & Rehabilitation Board, presented on ways to ensure better health for women who use drugs.
