FCS & CA Minister Attends ‘Eye Care Hospital 25th Anniversary Celebration’

Aizawl : Today, the Eye Care Hospital celebrated its 25th anniversary at the Conference Hall in Dawrpui South. Pu B. Lalchhanzova, Minister of State for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumers Affairs, inaugurated the event. The celebration included a special program on the 3rd floor of Eye Care Hospital, attended by Dr. Lalbiakkima, President of the Mizoram State Medical Association, and Dr. Aniruddha Maiti, Director of Global Eye Hospital, Kolkata. The event was coordinated by Dr. David L. Khiangte, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Eye Care Hospital.

During the event, Supply Minister Pu B. Lalchhanzova emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing public health services, noting that Eye Care Hospital has been pivotal in providing essential care to the community. He remarked on the importance of the hospital in addressing the needs of the public, particularly emphasizing its role in celebrating its 25th anniversary. He encouraged continued efforts to improve services and highlighted the importance of the community’s support.

In his address, Dr. K. L. Remsanga, Managing Director of Eye Care Hospital, spoke about the achievements over the past 25 years. Minister Pu B. Lalchhanzova presented the Silver Jubilee Souvenir, which featured live surgeries on retinal and anterior segments performed by Dr. Aniruddha Maiti and his team. The Continuing Medical Education Credit Programme was introduced, involving collaborations with various institutions, including Civil Hospital, Aizawl; Zoram Medical College; Synod Hospital, Durtlang; Agartala Govt. Medical College; Global Eye Hospital, Kolkata; Chandraprabha Eye Hospital, Jorhat; and Amulya Jyoti Eye Foundation, Kolkata.

Eye Care Hospital (also known as Eye Care Centre) was established on August 1, 1999, initially starting as an eye clinic before evolving into a full-fledged Eye Hospital. On September 19, 2020, the Christian Hospital, Serkawn, also opened a Satellite Vision Centre.

Eye Care Hospital is governed by a board of directors and has a dedicated team, including 2 Eye Surgeons, 3 Staff Nurses, 5 Optometrists, 2 IV Grade staff, 3 Opticians, 4 Administrative Staff, and 4 Visiting Surgeons (specialists from outside Mizoram). Additionally, there are 4 B.Sc. Optometrist Interns.

From July 1, 2015, to September 31, 2024, Eye Care Hospital has treated 60,841 patients, performing 3,643 cataract surgeries (115 Small Incision Cataract Surgeries and 3,528 Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgeries). LASIK surgeries totaled 1,815 (634 for males and 1,181 for females). The hospital also conducted 7 Keratoplasties, 904 Retina Treatments, and various free eye camps and school screenings.
