Police Commemoration Day Solemnly Observed With Pride And Gratitude

Aizawl : Police Commemoration Day is observed annually across the country on 21st October to honor the supreme sacrifices of police personnel. The day marks the memory of ten police officers who laid down their lives in the line of duty while defending the nation’s frontiers. On 21st October 1959, a patrol led by DCIO Karam Singh of the 3rd Battalion, CRPF, was ambushed by Chinese forces in the Hot Springs area of Ladakh, at an altitude of 15,000-16,000 feet above sea level. As a result, ten brave officers were killed, and seven were injured and taken captive.

Following this incident, the Annual Conference of IGPs from States and Union Territories in 1960 passed a resolution to recognize 21st October as Police Commemoration Day. Since then, the day has been observed every year to honor the police martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. On this day, Commemoration Day Parades are held in all state capitals and district headquarters to pay respects to these fallen heroes. The names of police martyrs across the country are read out as a tribute to their sacrifices, acknowledging their courage and dedication.

Between 1st September 2023 and 31st August 2024, a total of 216 police personnel laid down their lives in the line of duty. Since 15th August 1947, a total of 36,449 police officers have died in service. Fortunately, no personnel from Mizoram Police lost their lives during the past year. However, since 1966, a total of 54 Mizoram Police martyrs have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

To honor the martyrs, Mizoram Police held a Commemoration Day Parade on 21st October 2024 at 0700 hours in Aizawl, the state capital, as well as at district and battalion headquarters. The main parade and wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Martyrs’ Memorial, 1st Battalion MAP Headquarters, Aizawl, where DGP Mizoram, Pu Anil Shukla, IPS, along with senior police officers and representatives from CRPF, BSF, SIB, and Assam Rifles, paid their respects and homage to the martyrs.
