BJP Leader Gopal Shetty Withdraws Candidacy, Strengthens Party Unity
BJP leader Gopal Shetty announced his withdrawal from an independent candidacy in the Borivali Assembly constituency, relieving the party of a potential rebellion ahead of Maharashtra’s assembly elections. Shetty, a two-time Member of Parliament from Mumbai North, had expressed dissatisfaction when the BJP chose Sanjay Upadhyay over him for the seat, despite his long-standing dedication to the party. His initial decision to run independently created a challenge for the BJP, especially as the deadline for withdrawing nominations approached on Monday, just weeks before the November 20 elections.
Shetty’s decision to step aside came after extensive discussions with senior BJP leaders, including Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who aimed to address Shetty’s grievances and avoid any negative impact on the party’s unity. Fadnavis emphasized the value of party loyalty, expressing confidence in Shetty’s ultimate decision to align with the party’s direction. The BJP’s strategic choice to replace current MLA Sunil Rane with Upadhyay highlighted an effort to bring new representation to Borivali, though it initially left Shetty feeling overlooked.
In the days leading up to his decision, key BJP figures such as Mumbai BJP President Ashish Shelar, MP Piyush Goyal, and BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde met with Shetty to address his concerns. These talks culminated in a meeting at Shetty’s residence, where he was reassured of the party’s commitment to address his grievances about the decision-making process. Shetty, who previously won the Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat in both 2014 and 2019, expressed his frustration with the party’s handling of nominations. However, he remained clear that his aim was not to harm the BJP but rather to draw attention to procedural issues he felt needed attention.
Speaking to the media, Shetty confirmed his decision to withdraw, explaining that he did not seek to disrupt the party but felt compelled to address his concerns for future decision-making. He said, “I am withdrawing. My intention was never to become an MLA at any cost. While offers from other parties were extended to me, my loyalty lies with the BJP, and my stand was about the principles of process and fairness within the party.”
Shetty’s withdrawal offers BJP a smoother path to the upcoming elections, as he emphasized his continued commitment to the party’s success and long-term unity.
