Horticulture Minister Prof. Lalnilawma Visits Dragon Fruit Farm in Thenzawl
Serchhip : Horticulture Minister Prof. Lalnilawma visited the Lamlian Dung Zau Dragon Fruit Farm in Thenzawl.
During his visit, Prof. Lalnilawma expressed his appreciation for the hard work and progress of the farm’s cultivators. He noted that the government’s support for such initiatives is strong and emphasized plans to continue assisting local farmers in their efforts. Addressing food processing, he highlighted ongoing efforts to develop methods for dragon fruit preservation and powder production. Plans are underway to establish more distribution centers and explore additional methods to enhance dragon fruit farming. He also mentioned the government’s intention to support farmers across Mizoram by forming clusters, like the one in Lamlian Dung Zau, to facilitate collaborative efforts among various government departments. The minister stated that the government aims to expand this approach to other regions, providing greater opportunities for farmers to achieve success. Prof. Lalnilawma also remarked on the farm’s potential to become a prominent tourist destination.
This year, 48 households produced a total of 557 quintals of dragon fruit at the Lamlian Dung Zau Dragon Fruit Farm. The largest yield came from Ms. Gaby Zosangpuii, who produced 21 quintals, completing nine cycles within five months. The 48 households, including members of a local society, have established agreements with Local Soda Pvt Ltd for regular deliveries, helping sustain their production. Mizoram’s Chief Minister has previously visited the site, devising plans to address water and road challenges. The Mizoram Tourism Department is also involved in the project, with plans to develop farm-stay accommodations for visiting tourists.
As a recognition, District Horticulture Office organized a ceremony where Prof. Lalnilawma presented citations to outstanding dragon fruit farmers. The “Best Harvest Award” was presented to Ms. Gaby Zosangpuii, the “Most Improved Award” to Mr. Lalhmingmawia, the “Most Promising Award” to Mr. L.P. Mawia, and the “Best Farmer Award” to Mr. Ramngaihsanga.
The program was led by Mr. C. Lalrinthanga, Chairman of the Lamlian Dung Zau Society, with Vice Chairman Mr. Vanlalhruaia expressing gratitude at the event’s conclusion.
Additionally, Rural Development Minister Prof. Lalnilawma inspected MGNREGA works along Thenzawl Zote Road, accompanied by Project Director Dr. Malsawmtluanga Fanchun, District Horticulture Officer Mr. R. Lalrintluanga, Senior Executive Engineer (PHE) Mr. Isaac Lalchhuanmawia, and Serchhip DIPRO Ms. Lalnunmawii.
