Yogi govt encourages farmers to boost garlic cultivation in UP

Lucknow : The Yogi government has launched a special initiative to promote garlic cultivation in Uttar Pradesh under the Integrated Horticulture Development Mission.

This mission, which is funded by the Government of India, is being implemented across 45 districts in the state. Under the mission, the central government’s share of the funding is set at 60 percent, while the state government will contribute 40 percent. This initiative aims to boost garlic production in the state, helping farmers increase their income.

The districts benefiting from this program include Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Moradabad, Agra, Mathura, Mainpuri, Hathras, Kanpur, Etawah, Kannauj, Lucknow, Unnao, Sitapur, Rae Bareli, Barabanki, Sultanpur, Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Siddharth Nagar, Ballia, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Banda, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Chitrakoot, Mahoba, Lalitpur, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Bhadohi, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Ayodhya, and Farrukhabad.

Under this scheme, the Horticulture Department in Uttar Pradesh has set a permissible unit cost of Rs 30,000 per hectare for garlic cultivation. Farmers will receive a subsidy of 40 percent, up to a maximum of Rs 12,000 per hectare. The subsidy is available for land ranging from 0.2 hectares to 4 hectares per farmer.

Garlic seeds, priced between Rs 370 to Rs 390 per kilogram, will be provided by the National Horticulture Research and Development Institute in New Delhi.
Farmers can avail the benefits of this scheme on a first-come, first-serve basis. Interested farmers can contact the District Horticulture Officer’s office in their district or register online on the official website: http://dbt.uphorticulture.in.

To meet the growing demand for garlic, the Yogi government has set a target to expand garlic cultivation by 10,000 hectares under the Spice Area Expansion Program. The proposal of this scheme for the financial year 2024-25 was sent to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Horticulture Section, Government of India, which has already been approved.
