Gondia Bus Accident Claims 9 Lives; CM Announces ₹10 Lakh Aid

The tragic bus accident in Gondia, Maharashtra, claimed the lives of nine individuals, while several others remain critically injured, raising concerns that the death toll may increase. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced immediate financial assistance of ₹10 lakh for the victims. Preliminary reports suggest the accident occurred when the bus driver lost control while attempting to avoid a collision with a biker.

The incident took place near Khajri village on the Gondia-Kohamara State Highway. A Shivshahi bus, part of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), swerved to save a biker, lost control, and overturned. The mishap occurred between 12:00 and 12:30 PM on Friday, trapping several passengers under the overturned bus, which led to instant fatalities. The chaotic aftermath saw rescue efforts mobilized to address the emergency.

The bus, identified as MH 09 EM 1273, was traveling from Bhandara to Gondia via Sakoli and Lakhani. As the bus approached a turn, a biker suddenly appeared, prompting the driver to swerve sharply. This maneuver caused the vehicle to overturn, resulting in a devastating crash.

At the time of the accident, more than 35 passengers were onboard. Nine fatalities have been confirmed, with several others receiving treatment for injuries at the District Government Hospital (KTS) in Gondia. Eyewitnesses reported that the bus driver fled the scene after the accident. Local authorities used a crane to lift the overturned bus and clear the wreckage.

Police have initiated an investigation and are searching for the absconding driver. The front section of the bus sustained severe damage, further complicating rescue efforts. Authorities have contacted the families of the deceased, and post-mortem examinations are being conducted.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed that immediate support and proper medical care for the injured were prioritized. In a statement, the CMO noted, “Eight bodies have been recovered so far, and the toll may rise. Local officials have been directed to provide immediate and comprehensive treatment for the injured.”

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The tragic accident involving the Shivshahi bus near Sadak Arjuni has claimed lives. My heartfelt tribute to the deceased, and we stand in solidarity with their families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.” Fadnavis further emphasized the availability of private hospitals for treatment and instructed the Gondia Collector to arrange transfers to Nagpur if required. Senior administrative officers are coordinating relief efforts at the site.

As the investigation continues, updates regarding the incident and the condition of the injured are awaited. The accident underscores the need for enhanced safety measures on roads to prevent such tragedies in the future.
