Enhancing Infrastructure Facilities at the Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine (GHTM), Tambaram
The Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine (GHTM), established in 1928 at Tambaram Sanatorium, plays a pioneering role in providing treatment for advanced pulmonary diseases and in improving public health, particularly for tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS. With 776 beds and an additional 120 beds in the rehabilitation center, this hospital provides specialized care for both outpatient and inpatient services for more than 100 pulmonary patients across 31 wards.
The hospital offers medical treatment for various respiratory ailments, including tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, allergic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, interstitial lung diseases, lung malignancies, and several other respiratory conditions. Recognized as a premier center for HIV and TB treatment, GHTM plays a vital role in providing intensive medical care.
In recent times, the hospital has established a dedicated rehabilitation center to provide comprehensive treatment for patients suffering from chronic respiratory illnesses. This center was inaugurated earlier by the Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
The Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine provides treatment annually to approximately 1,60,000 outpatients, 15,000 inpatients, and 4,000 HIV patients, while consistently addressing the growing healthcare needs of the state.
With World Bank funding, infrastructure development works are being undertaken at a cost of ₹8.23 crore under the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Reforms Project (TNHSRP). These developmental works include the following:
- Construction of new buildings,
- Compound wall,
- Internal access roads within the hospital campus,
- Stormwater drainage,
- Sumps for additional water storage and supply,
- Fire safety arrangements,
- Medical gas connections, and
- Electrical transformer installations.
These upgraded facilities reflect the Tamil Nadu Government’s commitment to providing easy and enhanced medical services to the people of the state.
