Donald Trump Convicted in Hush Money Case but Faces No Penalty

New Delhi: In a significant legal development, Donald Trump, the newly elected President of the United States, has been convicted in a hush money case. However, the Manhattan Criminal Court judge granted him an unconditional release, ensuring no obstacles remain for his upcoming inauguration. This makes Trump the first U.S. president to assume office after a criminal conviction.

The case revolves around allegations that Trump paid $130,000 to adult film star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign to silence her claims about their alleged relationship. Trump has consistently denied the allegations, stating during the hearing that the case was part of a broader conspiracy to prevent his re-election.

Justice Juan Merchan presided over the sentencing hearing, which was held via video conference. Despite the conviction, Trump was neither sentenced to jail time nor required to pay a fine. The verdict, delivered in a packed courtroom, marked the conclusion of the high-profile case. Trump is set to take the oath of office in 10 days.

During the proceedings, prosecutor Joshua Steinglass criticized Trump for allegedly undermining the legitimacy of the case through public statements and campaign rhetoric. He argued that Trump’s behavior was an attempt to discredit the judicial process.

Earlier, Trump had appealed to the Supreme Court to stay his conviction, but the court rejected his plea with a narrow 5-4 decision. The charges stemmed from accusations made by Daniels, who claimed that Trump paid her to remain silent about their alleged affair. Trump’s legal team has maintained that no wrongdoing occurred.

The case highlights the unprecedented nature of Trump’s presidency, as no other U.S. president has taken office while under criminal conviction. Despite this, Trump remains focused on his presidential responsibilities, dismissing the legal challenges as politically motivated attacks.
