Indore becoming India’s First wetland city is a moment of pride for us : CM Dr. Yadav

Indore has achieved another milestone by being designated as a prestigious Wetland City by the Ramsar Convention. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav hailed this recognition as a proud achievement for both the state and the country. He emphasized that this accolade marks a significant moment of pride for Madhya Pradesh. Ramsar, an international organization dedicated to environmental conservation, announced a list of 31 Wetland Cities on Saturday, recognizing urban centers that excel in preserving wetlands while advancing urban development. For the first time, two Indian cities, Indore and Udaipur, have earned a place on this esteemed list.

.Country’s first wetland city Indore

The Ramsar Convention on Saturday recognised 31 cities of the world as wetland cities and made the announcement. For the first time in the country, two cities have been recognised as wetland cities by Ramsar. Indore and Udaipur have been included as the first two cities of the country. Other cities of the world included in the released list are: Trelew of Argentina, Mechelen of Belgium, Kasane-Kazungula, Shakawe of Botswana, Valdivia of Chile, Chongming, Dali, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Jiujiang, Lhasa, Suzhou, Wenzhou, Yueyang of China, Abbeville, Arles, Hampigny of France, Babol, Bandar Kiahar, Gandoman of Iran (Islamic Republic), Nagoya city of Japan, Mehdia of Morocco, Balanga city of Philippines, Poznan of Poland, Gimhae, Mungyeong of Republic of Korea, Novi Sad of Serbia, Geneva of Switzerland and Victoria Falls of Zimbabwe have also been included.

It is noteworthy that recently Indore was nominated by the Central Government for recognition as a prestigious wetland city by the Ramsar Convention. Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Shri Bhupendra Yadav said that this will give Indore and Udaipur recognition with positive branding at the international level.

Indore becomes the leader in environment

Indore city was not only one of the cleanest cities of the country and the state from the environmental point of view, but Indore also got the pride of being the first wetland city of the country. Indore, developed as an industrial area, is also maintaining balance in the field of environment. Sirpur and Yashwant Sagar in Indore have already been declared Ramsar sites. Along with the conservation of lakes, environmental enhancement and development of ideal habitat for birds, Sirpur is being developed as a bird sanctuary.

Ramsar Sites

Ramsar Convention is also known as “Treaty on Wetlands”. This treaty was signed by various countries of the world in the year 1971 at a site called Ramsar in Iran. Thus, it is an inter-governmental treaty that provides a framework for the conservation of wetlands and their resources. According to these available criteria, assistance is provided in conserving wetlands. Similarly, in the year 2015 in the 12th Conference of Parties of the Ramsar Convention, a programme was started to recognise wetland cities. Cities that make an outstanding contribution in urban development along with conserving wetlands are recognised as wetland cities.
