Hamas Releases Six Israeli Hostages in Exchange for Palestinian Prisoners

JERUSALEM – Hamas militants released six Israeli hostages from Gaza on Saturday as part of a negotiated exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and detainees. This development came shortly after Israeli authorities confirmed that a body handed over earlier in the day was that of hostage Shiri Bibas.

Among those freed were Eliya Cohen (27), Omer Shem Tov (22), and Omer Wenkert (23), who had been abducted from the Nova music festival during the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel. The three were handed over to the Red Cross and transported to Israeli forces.

The release ceremony was conducted in front of a large crowd, with dozens of masked Hamas militants standing guard. Armed men flanked the hostages, who appeared visibly thin and pale. They were made to wave to the audience as part of the public display.

Two other hostages, Tal Shoham (40) and Avera Mengistu (39), were released earlier in Rafah, located in southern Gaza. The sixth hostage, Hisham Al-Sayed (36), was freed later in the afternoon in Gaza City. Israeli authorities later confirmed that Al-Sayed had crossed into Israeli territory and was in army custody.

Hostages Held for Years

Unlike the others, Mengistu and Al-Sayed had not been taken during the October 7 attack. Instead, they had been held captive by Hamas for nearly a decade after entering Gaza on their own accord. Shoham, on the other hand, was abducted from Kibbutz Be’eri along with his wife and two children. His family members had been released earlier during a temporary ceasefire in November 2023.

These six individuals were the last remaining captives from the group of 33 hostages set to be freed under the initial phase of the ceasefire deal that took effect on January 19. However, approximately 60 more hostages remain in Gaza, with reports indicating that fewer than half are still alive.

Public Reaction and Emotional Gatherings

The news of the hostage release sparked emotional reactions across Israel. In Tel Aviv, hundreds of Israelis gathered in the rain at Hostages Square, a site that has become a focal point for public demonstrations and vigils. Some lit candles beneath photos of the Bibas family, whose bodies were returned earlier this week. Others cheered as they watched live footage of the hostages’ release on large screens.

Among the crowd was Yael Alexander, whose son Edan, a dual US-Israeli national serving in the military, had been abducted from a base near Gaza in October.

“This gives me hope that our son Edan will be next,” she said, expressing optimism that further negotiations could lead to additional releases.

Further south, near the Gaza border, more people lined the roads to welcome the convoy transporting the freed hostages.

Criticism of Hamas’s Public Displays

The hostage release events, orchestrated by Hamas, have included public ceremonies where captives are presented on stage, often forced to wave or speak. These displays have drawn international condemnation, including from the United Nations, which has denounced the “parading of hostages” as inhumane.

Hamas, however, rejected the criticism, claiming that these ceremonies serve as a symbol of Palestinian unity.

Prisoner Exchange and Ceasefire Agreement

In return for the release of the six hostages, Israel is set to free 602 Palestinian prisoners and detainees. This latest phase of the ceasefire deal includes the release of:

  • 445 Gazans who were detained by Israeli forces during the ongoing conflict.
  • Dozens of convicts serving lengthy or life sentences, according to Hamas officials.

While the truce has largely held, tensions remain high, with both sides accusing each other of violations.

Bibas Family Tragedy and Misidentification Controversy

The fragile ceasefire nearly collapsed earlier this week due to a misidentification involving the body of Shiri Bibas. Hamas initially handed over remains on Thursday, which were mistakenly identified as hers. However, on Friday night, Hamas provided another body, which Israel’s Institute of Forensic Medicine confirmed belonged to Shiri Bibas.

“Our Shiri was returned home last night,” the Bibas family said in a statement.

The Bibas family has become a symbol of the suffering endured by Israel since the October 7 attack. The misidentification, coupled with Hamas’s staged handover of coffins, sparked outrage in Israel. Yarden Bibas, Shiri’s husband, had been separated from the family and was freed earlier on February 1.

Israeli military intelligence, backed by forensic analysis, determined that the Bibas children—10-month-old Kfir and 4-year-old Ariel—had been killed in captivity, allegedly “in cold blood” by their captors.

However, Hamas has denied responsibility for their deaths, claiming that the family was killed in an Israeli airstrike. A Gaza-based militant group, the Mujahideen Brigades, had previously claimed to be holding the family, which was later verified by Israeli military sources.

Uncertain Future for Hostages and Conflict Resolution

Although the ceasefire has temporarily halted hostilities, a permanent resolution remains elusive. Hamas has sought to demonstrate that it retains control over Gaza, despite suffering heavy losses.

The group initially triggered the war with its October 7 attack on Israeli communities, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken, according to Israeli reports.

Israel responded with an intense military campaign, which has resulted in at least 48,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Palestinian health officials. The offensive has devastated much of Gaza, leaving hundreds of thousands displaced, many of whom now depend on humanitarian aid.

Both sides have indicated a willingness to negotiate a second phase of the ceasefire agreement. Mediators have suggested that upcoming discussions will focus on securing the release of all remaining hostages and achieving a full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

However, with deep mistrust between the two parties and ongoing tensions, the path to lasting peace remains uncertain.
