Pope Francis Thanks Volunteers for ‘Miracle of Tenderness’ Amid Recovery
Rome: Pope Francis expressed his gratitude on Sunday to volunteers and healthcare workers for their compassionate care, calling it a “miracle of tenderness” as he continues to recover from double pneumonia. Doctors have provided positive updates on the 88-year-old pontiff’s health, reporting steady improvement after more than three weeks of hospitalization.
For the fourth consecutive Sunday, Pope Francis was unable to appear for his weekly blessing. However, he met with his top aides and the Holy See to distribute the message he had prepared. In it, he conveyed heartfelt thanks to those caring for the sick, acknowledging their dedication and kindness, particularly in times of suffering.
“During my extended stay in the hospital, I have personally experienced the thoughtfulness and tenderness of care, especially from doctors and healthcare workers, to whom I express my deepest gratitude,” the pope’s message from Gemelli Hospital read. “I also think of all those who stand by the sick in different ways, serving as a sign of the Lord’s presence. This ‘miracle of tenderness’ brings light to the darkness of pain.”
Pope Francis, who has a history of chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed in his youth, remains in stable condition. According to a Vatican statement on Saturday, he has been fever-free for several days, and his blood oxygen levels are good.
Despite his absence from public appearances, the pope has remained engaged with Church affairs. His message underscores the importance of compassion and service, especially for those enduring illness.
As he continues his recovery, Francis’ words serve as a reminder of the profound impact of kindness and care in times of adversity.
