Putin Thanks PM Modi, Trump for Efforts on Ukraine Ceasefire
Moscow : Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed gratitude to several world leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump, for their ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Putin Acknowledges Global Efforts
During a press briefing on Thursday, Putin recognized the commitment of multiple leaders in addressing the Ukraine crisis despite global challenges.
“I would like to offer my sincere thanks to President Trump of the United States for his focus on the Ukraine situation. Many world leaders, including President Xi Jinping of China, Prime Minister Modi of India, and the Presidents of Brazil and South Africa, have dedicated significant time to resolving this crisis. Their efforts are deeply appreciated as they serve the noble cause of ending the conflict and preventing further loss of life,” Putin stated.
India’s Firm Stance on Peace
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently emphasized peaceful resolution in Ukraine, reaffirming India’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy. During his recent meeting with Donald Trump at the White House, Modi clarified India’s position, stating that India does not remain neutral but firmly stands for peace.
“This is not an era of war but of dialogue and diplomacy,” Modi had asserted, highlighting India’s proactive engagement in global peace efforts. He has maintained open communication channels with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, urging constructive negotiations to end hostilities.
US Pushes for Ceasefire Deal
The United States has put forward a 30-day ceasefire proposal, calling on Russia to accept it without preconditions. While Putin expressed support for a ceasefire, he noted that certain “nuances” must be addressed, indicating that the terms of implementation required further discussion.
Reacting to Putin’s comments, Donald Trump described them as “promising” but acknowledged that the statement was incomplete, suggesting the need for further diplomatic engagements.
Ukraine Agrees to Ceasefire Proposal
Meanwhile, Ukraine has accepted the US-backed ceasefire proposal, following discussions in Saudi Arabia earlier this week. This decision came after growing diplomatic pressure, particularly after a high-profile meeting between Trump and Zelensky in February.
A Conflict with Far-Reaching Consequences
The Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022, has caused widespread devastation, with hundreds of thousands killed or injured and millions displaced. The prolonged conflict has also led to severe economic and geopolitical tensions between Russia and the West.
With ceasefire discussions gaining momentum, there is renewed hope for a resolution. However, analysts caution that many complexities remain, and sustained diplomatic efforts will be essential to achieving lasting peace.
