Dharavi survey crosses earlier benchmark, 63k tenements surveyed
Mumbai – The ongoing survey for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project has surpassed the scope of the previous survey conducted in 2007-08, marking a significant milestone in mapping one of Asia’s largest slums. The survey aims to document both residential and commercial structures in Dharavi.
Officials reported that more than 63,000 tenements have already been surveyed, exceeding the earlier benchmark of approximately 60,000 ground-floor tenements. Under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) guidelines, only ground-floor tenants are typically eligible for free housing. However, the current redevelopment initiative extends beyond just ground-floor structures.
“Our survey has reached an important and crucial milestone—one that the government can take pride in. This redevelopment scheme is not confined to ground-floor tenements but also includes upper-floor structures, ensuring that no one in Dharavi is left behind,” said DRP CEO SVR Srinivas.
According to the latest survey figures, lane reconnaissance has been completed for over 95,000 tenements, more than 89,000 tenements have been numbered, and door-to-door surveys have been conducted for over 63,000 tenements. Unlike the previous survey, the current one includes upper-floor structures, existing SRA buildings, slum dwellers on RLDA land, and all religious structures.
“We are dealing with large numbers, and we have now entered the final phase of the survey. The overwhelming participation of Dharavi residents clearly reflects their support for redevelopment. However, we urge those who have not yet participated to do so at the earliest so that the next phase of the project can commence. Residents who have missed the survey should voluntarily come forward, as we may not revisit tenements where occupants have refused to participate or have not submitted their documents despite multiple attempts,” Srinivas added.
Navbharat Mega Developers Private Limited (NMDPL), the special purpose vehicle (SPV) responsible for executing the project, is preparing to construct nearly 1.5 lakh tenements. Most hutments have grown vertically to G+2 levels, significantly increasing the number of tenements requiring rehabilitation.
An NMDPL spokesperson expressed satisfaction with the progress, stating, “We are pleased to be nearing the completion of the survey and encourage any remaining residents to come forward as soon as possible. The positive response from Dharavi residents has been inspiring. Their enthusiasm and desire for a dignified life have propelled this redevelopment project forward. We salute their spirit and commitment to securing a better future for themselves and future generations.”
All eligible residents will be rehabilitated within Dharavi itself, while those deemed ineligible will be relocated to modern townships outside Dharavi. These new townships, situated within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), will feature comprehensive social and public infrastructure, including Metro connectivity and other mobility solutions.
