Telangana Among India’s Top Five Upper-Middle-Income States: KTR Credits Decade of BRS Governance
Hyderabad, July 2026 : Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) on Wednesday hailed the World Bank’s reported classification of Telangana among India’s top five upper-middle-income states, describing it as a moment of pride for every resident of the state. He attributed the achievement to the vision of former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) and the developmental policies implemented during the BRS government’s decade-long tenure.
Reacting to reports based on the World Bank’s per capita income classification, KTR said the recognition reflected the hard work, resilience, and aspirations of the people of Telangana. He asserted that the state’s rapid economic progress since its formation had transformed it into one of India’s most prosperous regions.
According to the reports, five Indian states and territories have crossed the World Bank’s upper-middle-income benchmark based on per capita income. Delhi tops the list with a per capita income of USD 6,217, followed by Karnataka (USD 5,579), Telangana (USD 5,407), Tamil Nadu (USD 5,329), and Gujarat (USD 4,734).
Sharing his reaction on social media platform X, KTR said the recognition was a testament to Telangana’s remarkable transformation since becoming a separate state in 2014.
“This is a proud moment for the people of Telangana. A state that was carved out after years of struggle has emerged as one of the most prosperous regions in the country. The World Bank’s report confirms that Telangana has crossed the upper-middle-income benchmark, placing it among India’s top five states in terms of per capita income,” he wrote.
KTR highlighted that Telangana’s economic journey over the past decade had been driven by strategic investments in infrastructure, agriculture, irrigation, industrial development, information technology, and welfare initiatives. He maintained that these policies had significantly improved living standards and increased the earning capacity of the people.
Reflecting on the state’s progress, KTR said Telangana had evolved from a region once associated with economic backwardness into one of India’s leading growth engines.
“What has happened in the last ten years is nothing short of extraordinary. A region that once struggled with poverty has become a prosperous state. Telangana’s people are not poor; they are citizens of a state that has steadily moved towards growth and prosperity,” he said.
The BRS leader also rejected criticism from political opponents who have alleged that Telangana is facing financial distress. He argued that the World Bank’s reported assessment effectively counters claims that the state is economically bankrupt.
“Telangana has not become a failed state. Instead, it stands today as a successful and financially strong state. The latest international recognition exposes the baseless propaganda spread by those claiming that Telangana is bankrupt,” KTR stated.
He congratulated the people of Telangana for their contribution to the state’s economic rise, saying every citizen had played a role through hard work, innovation, entrepreneurship, and dedication.
KTR further asserted that both national and international assessments validate the economic model pursued under KCR’s leadership. He claimed that the BRS government’s long-term planning, coupled with its focus on inclusive growth and infrastructure development, had laid the foundation for Telangana’s emergence as one of India’s fastest-growing and most prosperous states.
The BRS leader concluded by saying that the recognition should inspire the state to continue on its path of sustainable development and economic progress while strengthening opportunities for future generations.
