LMC Leaders Visit Lunglei Water Intake Site at Pialthleng; Discuss Long-Term Solution to Town’s Recurring Water Crisis

Lunglei : Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC) leaders, led by Chairman Pu Lalzuithanga, visited the water intake site at Pialthleng to review the ongoing project being implemented under AMRUT 2.0, aimed at addressing Lunglei town’s recurring water scarcity. The gravity dam being constructed to draw water from the Tlawng River is funded through the centrally sponsored AMRUT 2.0 scheme, with a total outlay of ₹4.7 crore.

The LMC Chairman was accompanied by Vice Chairman Pu K. Lalrinawma, Executive Councillors Pu Zorinsanga Hmar and Pi Lalhruaitluangi Sailo, councillors, the Chief Executive Officer, the Executive Engineer of PHED Lunglei Water Supply Maintenance Division, and the MJA President. The team also held discussions with representatives of HS Construction, the contractor currently executing the project, and reviewed the progress on-site.

Chairman Pu Lalzuithanga highlighted that due to the prolonged and severe water crisis faced by the public, there is an urgent need for timely completion of the water intake infrastructure. He urged the contractor to complete the project efficiently and within the timeline, ensuring quality work. The LMC is committed to resolving the water issues of Lunglei through sustainable and improved infrastructure.

PHED Executive Engineer Er V. Laldanmawia informed that the contract agreement for the gravity dam project was signed on February 27, 2024, with an overall project cost of ₹4.7 crore. Although materials were procured last year, the actual construction began only this February due to delays. The deadline for completion is August this year. He explained that the intake structure would be about 15 meters high, and approximately 35% of the work has been completed as of now.

Though the project is funded under AMRUT 2.0, the contractor has not yet received any central funds. As a result, the contractor has been self-funding the work so far.

LMC leaders affirmed their commitment to ensuring the smooth and timely completion of the project, recognizing its importance in securing a reliable water source for Lunglei. They also reiterated efforts to ensure timely release of AMRUT 2.0 funds and to explore further improvements in Lunglei’s water supply system.
