Delhi Court remands Arvind Kejriwal to three days of CBI custody in Delhi Excise Liquor Policy case.
Delhi: Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation’s plea seeking custody of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi Excise Liquor Policy case. The Court remanded him to three days of CBI custody after hearing lengthy arguments.
The CBI had initially sought five days of custody. Earlier today, the Court granted the CBI permission to arrest Kejriwal. Additionally, a petition filed in the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court’s order imposing an interim stay on the operation of the Trial Court’s order granting Kejriwal bail in a money laundering case was withdrawn. The Supreme Court granted permission to file a fresh application.
On June 20, 2024, the Rouse Avenue Court granted bail to Kejriwal in the money laundering case. However, the next day, the ED opposed the bail before the Delhi High Court, stating that the order was pronounced late at night, and no clear opportunity was given to oppose the bail. The Delhi High Court, on June 25, 2024, allowed the ED’s challenge and stayed the bail, stating that the Trial Court did not appropriately appreciate the materials and pleas taken by the ED.
The Supreme Court, while hearing a challenge against the Delhi High Court’s order dated June 21, 2024, imposing an interim stay on the bail granted by the Trial Court, adjourned the matter for hearing on June 26, 2024, which has now been withdrawn with permission to file a fresh application. Earlier, on May 10, 2024, the Supreme Court granted Kejriwal interim bail till June 1, 2024, considering the 18th Lok Sabha General Elections, with a direction to surrender on June 2, 2024, under several conditions. On May 29, 2024, the Supreme Court Registry refused to list Kejriwal’s application seeking a seven-day extension of his interim bail in the Liquor Policy Case, granted on May 10, 2024.
