Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd) Graces Mizoram University’s Foundation Day and Silver Jubilee Launch Celebration

Aizawl : Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), the Governor of Mizoram and Chief Rector of Mizoram University, graced the Foundation Day and Silver Jubilee Launch Celebration of Mizoram University (MZU) held today at the MZU Auditorium. During the event, the Silver Jubilee logo was also unveiled. Ambassador (Retd.) Mr. Gurjit Singh was the special guest on the occasion.

Governor General Singh (Retd) expressed his appreciation for MZU as it marks 25 years of establishment, acknowledging the significant contributions made by its faculty, staff, and students over the years. He praised the University’s remarkable progress despite limited time and resources, stating that MZU has not only contributed to the growth of Mizoram but also to the broader academic advancement in the North East region. He emphasized the importance of continued academic excellence, the quality of infrastructure, and the University’s scenic and conducive campus for higher learning, which together have made MZU a premier center for education.

Highlighting key achievements, the Governor noted that MZU has received an ‘A’ grade from NAAC accreditation and has consistently ranked among India’s top 100 Higher Education Institutions in the NIRF rankings since 2016. It is also ranked among the top 30 universities in India by India Today and holds the second position among eight central universities in North East India. The University has published 2,234 research papers and 868 books to date. He lauded the student-to-teacher ratio (1:10), the presence of over 90 PhD holders among faculty, and the availability of 94 teaching posts.

General Singh also highlighted MZU’s strategic role in India’s Act East Policy, expressing confidence in the University’s potential to strengthen academic ties and cultural exchange with South East Asian nations.

Ambassador (Retd.) Gurjit Singh also spoke at the event, expressing his happiness at being part of MZU’s Foundation Day and Silver Jubilee launch. He underlined the importance of government initiatives such as the Act East Policy and affirmed Mizoram’s growing significance in the region’s geopolitical and educational landscape.

MZU Vice Chancellor Prof. D.C. Deka delivered the welcome address, while Prof. Lalnuntluanga, Controller of Examinations and Programme Committee Convenor, outlined the planned Silver Jubilee events. The Governor led the assembly in observing a moment of silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the recent Pahalgam attack, including Pope Francis’s message of condolence.

The celebration included the unveiling of the specially designed Silver Jubilee logo and a slide show narrating the University’s journey. MZU Registrar Prof. Lalnundanga delivered the vote of thanks to conclude the event.

The Silver Jubilee programme, beginning today and extending until 25 April next year, will feature a series of events including seminars, exhibitions, awareness campaigns, tree-planting drives, SARAS fairs, blood donation camps, free health check-ups, music festivals, cleanliness drives, mock drills, and more.

Mizoram University was established in 2001 and currently houses 37 departments across 10 Schools of Study, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programmes. It has 40 affiliated colleges and one constituent college. Students hail from over 20 Indian states and include around 100 international students.
