Textile Minister Sanjay Savkare Inspects Silk Thread Production Centre at Kavathe Ekand
Sangli : Textile Minister Sanjay Savkare today visited and inspected the Silk Thread Production Centre at Kavathe Ekand in Tasgaon Taluka.
Present on the occasion were Silk Development Officer P.S. Padvi, Senior Technical Assistant of the District Sericulture Office Sunil Patil, Senior Field Assistant B.D. Mane, Naib Tehsildar Prakash Burungale, Police Patil Suresh Patil, and others.
The Kavathe Ekand centre houses two 400-end machines, which together produce around 20,000 kilograms of silk thread per month from cocoons. The shed at the centre covers 30,000 square feet of built-up area. From 18,000 kilograms of cocoons, approximately 2,800 kilograms of silk yarn can be produced—translating to an annual capacity of around 216 metric tons of cocoon reeling, yielding 33.5 metric tons of silk yarn per year.
The silk thread produced here is sold in major silk markets such as the Bangalore Silk Exchange, Varanasi, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and other states, fetching a price of around ₹5,400 to ₹5,500 per kilogram. The Government of Maharashtra provides a subsidy of ₹150 per kilogram of yarn produced.
The centre employs 60 to 70 local workers daily, creating significant employment opportunities at the local level. Furthermore, farmers from nearby districts like Satara, Kolhapur, and Pune now have access to a local cocoon market, boosting the sericulture economy in the region.
