RCB Climbs to Top of IPL 2025 Table with a Six-Wicket Win Over Delhi Capitals

New Delhi – The Arun Jaitley Stadium was alive with excitement as passionate fans in New Delhi hoped for a grand homecoming of Virat Kohli and a victory for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). They got both, though the match was far from straightforward. Despite RCB’s early troubles, Krunal Pandya’s brilliant all-round performance helped RCB secure a six-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals (DC), lifting them to the top of the IPL 2025 points table.

DC’s Struggles with the Bat: A Below-Par Total

RCB’s bowlers, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3-33) and Josh Hazlewood (2-36), executed a well-planned attack, helping restrict DC to just 162/8 in their allotted 20 overs. The DC batsmen found themselves under pressure throughout their innings, struggling to capitalize on the early momentum built by Abishek Porel’s blistering 28 from just 11 balls. Porel’s exquisite timing was on full display as he struck Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a four, followed by a six, and then a delightful pick-up sweep for another maximum.

However, the pace attack, led by Hazlewood, broke the opening partnership by dismissing Porel, who gloved a short pull to the keeper. DC continued to falter with Karun Nair falling shortly after, top-edging a pull shot off Dayal to mid-wicket. At 56/2, DC found themselves struggling, with RCB’s spinners Suyash Sharma and Krunal Pandya making it hard for the batsmen to find the boundary. Their tight lines saw RCB apply constant pressure.

The biggest blow for DC came when Faf du Plessis, who was struggling for fluency, was dismissed by Krunal Pandya, holing out to long-on. DC’s recovery came through KL Rahul and Axar Patel, who steadied the innings with an effective partnership. Rahul took on the bowlers with precision, hitting boundaries off Suyash and Dayal, while Axar joined the attack, lofting Krunal for a huge six.

But RCB’s bowlers continued to tighten the noose, and the pressure mounted. Hazlewood removed Axar Patel with a brilliant delivery that knocked over his middle stump, and from there, it was all about containing DC. The middle-order batsmen could not accelerate, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar removing Rahul in the 17th over, and impact player Ashutosh Sharma being dismissed for a duck.

Tristan Stubbs provided a brief flourish for DC, scooping and lofting Hazlewood for boundaries, while Vipraj Nigam ramped him over the third man for a six. Stubbs then switched gears, drilling Dayal for two fours before hitting a switch-hit for another maximum. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar had the final say, dismissing Stubbs in the final over, though his efforts took DC past 160, a total which never looked enough.

RCB’s Rocky Start, but Krunal Pandya and Kohli Steer Them to Victory

RCB’s chase got off to a disastrous start as they found themselves at a precarious 26/3. Axar Patel struck early, dismissing Jacob Bethell for a miscue, while he followed that with a huge breakthrough, castling Devdutt Padikkal. To make matters worse, captain Rajat Patidar was run out by a brilliant direct hit from Karun Nair.

Despite the collapse, RCB’s hopes rested on their experienced duo of Virat Kohli and Krunal Pandya. The powerplay was a struggle for both, as DC’s bowlers kept them on the back foot. However, after the sixth over, Kohli found his rhythm. He pulled Kuldeep Yadav for a four and rotated strike with ease, allowing Pandya to take the aggressive role. Pandya began finding his touch with some stunning sixes—first lofting Mukesh Kumar over the boundary, then going back-to-back with two more against Kuldeep. Pandya, who had been rusty early on, was now in full flow, hitting sixes with ease.

Krunal Pandya’s brilliant knock of 73* off 47 balls turned the match around. He was aggressive yet calculated, bringing up his half-century off 38 balls. Kohli, on the other hand, played the anchor role, looking solid with a 51-run knock off 47 balls. The duo shared a match-winning partnership of 119 runs for the fourth wicket, with Pandya taking the lead in terms of aggression. The partnership was a beautiful blend of experience and youthful exuberance, with Pandya dominating while Kohli rotated strike and kept the pressure on the bowlers.

RCB’s chase was completed in just 18.3 overs, with Pandya and Kohli steering them home with ease. Kohli brought up his sixth fifty of the season, and after a crucial partnership, he fell while attempting a lofted shot to long-off against Dushmantha Chameera. But Tim David made sure there was no further drama, finishing off the chase in style with an unbeaten 21 from just five balls.

David struck a six and a four, including a shot off a no-ball, to seal a comprehensive victory for RCB with nine balls to spare, much to the delight of fans who had gathered in the national capital.

Conclusion: RCB’s Dominant Win, Both with the Bat and Ball

In the end, it was Krunal Pandya’s all-round performance, supported by strong contributions from the bowlers, that led RCB to a dominant victory over Delhi Capitals. RCB’s bowlers had done well to restrict DC to a below-par total, and their batting was clinical, especially the 119-run partnership between Pandya and Kohli. With this win, RCB continues its impressive form in IPL 2025, maintaining an unbeaten record in both away games and run chases.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals: 162/8 in 20 overs (KL Rahul 41, Tristan Stubbs 34; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3-33, Josh Hazlewood 2-36)
Royal Challengers Bangalore: 165/4 in 18.3 overs (Krunal Pandya 73*, Virat Kohli 51; Axar Patel 2-19, Dushmantha Chameera 1-24)
RCB won by six wickets
