Mizoram Lok Sabha MP Meets National Commission for Scheduled Tribes Chairman
In continuation of his efforts for the welfare of Mizoram, Lok Sabha MP from Mizoram, Pu Richard Vanlalhmangaiha, met with the Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, Pu Antar Singh Arya, at his office in Delhi today. The meeting was marked by a meaningful discussion on several pressing issues faced by Scheduled Tribes, especially from Mizoram.
During the meeting, Pu Richard raised concerns not only on behalf of the people of Mizoram but also for tribal communities across India (approximately 50–60 million people) who are facing various hardships. One of the major issues discussed was the misapplication of Income Tax provisions, particularly Section 10(26) of the Income Tax Act, which grants tax exemptions to Scheduled Tribe individuals residing in specified areas. Despite this, many individuals—especially pensioners, ex-servicemen, and those working in central or bank offices—continue to face deductions such as TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) from their pensions or salaries.
He also highlighted that many tribal individuals are unaware of their entitlements under this exemption and continue to pay taxes unnecessarily. In some cases, they are even compelled to file income tax returns despite being exempt, creating significant difficulties, especially for those living in remote areas.
MP Richard emphasized that this widespread misunderstanding and misapplication of tax rules have caused unnecessary distress to tribal populations. In response, Chairman Antar Singh Arya acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and assured that appropriate measures and follow-up actions would be taken to address these issues effectively.
