Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. M.K. Stalin inspects the Nilgiris Government Medical College Hospital.
The Nilgiris Government Medical College Hospital in Udhagamandalam has been constructed on an area of 25 acres at a cost of ₹143.69 crore. It comprises 700 beds with eight standalone buildings connected by a central building. Facilities include Block A and B for outpatient treatment, ten modern operation theatres in Block C, and intensive care and surgical wards in Block D. In Blocks E, F, G, and H, there are four inpatient wards.
In addition, a special treatment unit has been established in Block F for rare diseases such as haemophilia, sickle cell anaemia, and thalassemia. A 24-hour emergency department with 20 beds and an accident and emergency care unit (Emergency Block) have also been provided.
To support emergency and planned surgeries, this newly built hospital is equipped with all necessary facilities including an automated blood bank, patient care units, modern laundry systems, and mortuary facilities.
This prestigious Nilgiris Government Medical College Hospital, which is highly beneficial for the people of the Nilgiris district, was inaugurated on 6th April 2025 by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin.
During his visit to the Nilgiris district for inspection on 14th May 2025, Hon’ble Chief Minister Mr. M.K. Stalin personally visited the hospital to review its functioning. He inspected the services being provided to patients and inquired about treatment protocols from the doctors.
The Chief Minister also spoke to the inpatients and enquired about their treatment and well-being. Patients undergoing treatment expressed that they were receiving excellent care and thanked the Chief Minister for inaugurating such a well-equipped hospital.
After the inspection, the Hon’ble Chief Minister instructed that special priority should be given to senior citizens and differently-abled individuals. He also emphasized the importance of public awareness about schemes such as the “Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam” (Healthcare at Doorstep) for patients unable to visit the hospital and “Innuyir Kaapom – Nammai Kaakkum 48” (Golden Hour Emergency Care) for accident victims.
The Chief Minister interacted with trainee doctors and advised them to treat patients with compassion and sincerity. He also reviewed registers related to staff attendance and medicine stock.
Later, the Hon’ble Chief Minister visited the Nilgiris Government Medical College and interacted with the students. He encouraged them to serve the community and the nation with dedication and excellence. He also enquired about the teaching facilities and the students’ experiences.
Addressing the media after the inspection, the Chief Minister said that he had come today to inspect the functioning of the hospital which was inaugurated in April. He mentioned that the ₹143 crore facility has gained the people’s trust and that over 1300 outpatients receive care daily.
He also said that inpatient services are being effectively provided and expensive diagnostic tests such as MRI and CT scans are now available for free here, which earlier had to be done in private hospitals at high cost.
The Chief Minister noted that he personally met the medical students, inquired about the facilities provided to them, and found that everything was functioning smoothly. He assured that the government is ready to provide additional amenities as needed.
Present during this event were Member of Parliament Mr. A. Raja, Minister for Forests Mr. K. Ramachandran, Nilgiris District Collector Ms. Lakshmi Priya Tanneeru, IAS, Dean of Nilgiris Medical College Dr. M. Geethanjali, Vice Dean Dr. Sekhalitha, and senior government officials.
