Gained Insight into Prison Administration and Operations
Raipur : A group of 29 trainee officers selected through the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission undertook an educational visit to Raipur Central Jail today to gain a practical understanding of prison administration and related processes. The group included 9 Deputy Collectors, 6 Assistant Commissioners of State Tax, 9 Assistant Commissioners of Cooperation, and 5 District Excise Officers. These officers are currently undergoing joint foundational training at the Chhattisgarh Academy of Administration, Nimora, Raipur.
During the visit, the officers were introduced to the structure and functioning of the prison system, crime control, the justice process, and inmate rehabilitation. This hands-on exposure aimed to deepen their understanding of critical aspects of public administration.
Assistant Inspector General of Prisons, Mr. Amit Shandilya, briefed the officers on various aspects of jail management, including the administrative structure, security measures, prisoners’ rights, healthcare services, and educational and skill development programs. The trainees toured various units within the jail, including industrial workshops, kitchens, hospitals, libraries, and rehabilitation centers.
The officers observed how the prison administration plays a vital role not only in maintaining law and order but also in rehabilitating inmates and helping them reintegrate into society. They were also introduced to initiatives like legal aid services, yoga sessions, and recreational programs such as the jail radio ‘Umang-Tarang’ and jail theatre, which showcase the humane approach of prison reforms.
Mr. Shandilya engaged with the officers, addressing their queries and explaining the realities of prison life. Female officers were also given a tour of the women’s wing. The trainees appreciated the jail’s cleanliness, administrative efficiency, and employment-oriented programs. They acknowledged the vital role the prison system plays in upholding social justice and human dignity beyond mere law enforcement.
Mr. Shandilya emphasized that an administrative officer’s duty goes beyond enforcing laws — it includes ensuring justice and dignity for society’s most vulnerable. He added that such educational tours ground future officers in real-world challenges, enhancing their decision-making capabilities and empathetic leadership.
