Melting Point : -73.1 °C

Boiling Point : 139.5 °C

Density : 1.08 g/cm³

Molar Mass : 102.09 g/mol

Appearance : Clear, colorless liquid with a pungent, vinegar-like odor

Solubility : Slightly soluble in water, but dissolves in common organic solvents

Flammability : Acetic anhydride is flammable

Uses and Applications:

  • Production of Cellulose Acetate: A primary component in the production of cellulose acetate, used in textiles, plastics, and films.
  • Reagent in Organic Synthesis: Used in various chemical reactions as a reagent to introduce acetyl groups, making it a key component in synthesizing pharmaceuticals, dyes, and other organic compounds.
  • Specific Applications: Used in the production of aspirin, acetaminophen, and other pharmaceuticals.
  • Dehydrating Agent: Its dehydrating properties are utilized in various industrial processes.
  • Other Uses: Used in the manufacturing of explosives, perfumes, and other products.

Hazards and Considerations:

  • Corrosive: Acetic anhydride is corrosive to metals and tissue.
  • Eye and Skin Irritant: Contact with the eyes or skin can cause irritation and burns.
  • Inhalation Hazard: Inhaling acetic anhydride vapors can cause respiratory irritation.
  • Storage and Handling: Should be stored in a well-ventilated area, away from heat and ignition sources.
