Various Damages Reported Across Lunglei District Due to Heavy Rain and Strong Winds; No Report of Human Casualty or Injury So Far

Lunglei – From May 30, 2025, onward, heavy rainfall and strong winds have caused widespread damage across various areas of Lunglei District. As of 1:00 PM today (Sunday, June 1, 2025), the Lunglei District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC)/District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has received a total of 66 reports of damages.

Out of these, damages due to landslides were reported at 50 locations, wind-related damages at 8 locations, and flood-related damages at 5 locations. These incidents include numerous blockages of inter-village and intra-village roads, where immediate clearing operations have been initiated. Due to the unsafe condition of their homes, 36 families have been temporarily relocated to safer areas. Fortunately, no human casualties or injuries have been reported so far.

Yesterday, the Revenue Department, under Rahsiveng, promptly carried out clearing operations in affected road sections. However, the temporary diversion road at Phairuangkai remains inaccessible due to heavy flooding. Reports indicate that about 40–50 households in Khawmawi village have been affected by the rising waters of the Ngengpui and Kawrawng rivers. A portion of NH-302 between Hauruang and Pachang has been partially washed away, rendering it hazardous for travel.

In Bunghmun area, due to landslides, 5 families were evacuated from their homes and temporarily shifted to safer shelters. Additionally, 18 graves at the Bunghmun cemetery were reported to have collapsed due to soil erosion.

In Tuichawng, two families were relocated to RMSA School as a precaution against floodwater entering their homes. In Tlabung, 33 members of nine families were also moved to safer areas due to the rising waters of the Khawthlangtuipui River.

Today, in Serkawn–Zohnuai area, near Siangling Filling Station, a waiting shed collapsed due to landslides, blocking the road. The PWD began clearing operations, but due to continuous debris flow since early morning, the road could only be reopened in the afternoon. Repair work is ongoing on NH-54A below the blocked section of Theiriat road. At Theiriat, four families have been evacuated from their homes to safer areas due to landslide threats.

In Kawlhawk today, three families were relocated to safer shelters after their homes were affected by landslides. In Changpui, strong winds damaged one house and an Anganwadi Centre. In Mauzama, one house was also damaged by strong winds. In Bungtlang West, three families were shifted to safer areas after their homes were damaged by strong winds.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rain and wind across Mizoram from June 1 to 3, 2025. In light of this, Lunglei DDMA authorities have appealed to the public to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in landslide-prone or unstable areas.
