Lawngtlai District Committee Convene Meeting for Green Mizoram Day 2025

Lawngtlai : At 11:00 AM today, the Lawngtlai District Level Committee on Green Mizoram 2025 met to make preparations for “Green Mizoram Day 2025” in Lawngtlai. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Cheemala Siva Gopal Reddy, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Lawngtlai and Chairman of the District Level Committee on Green Mizoram.

Mr. Reddy opened the session by inviting suggestions from committee members. He praised the State Level Sub-Committee on Green Mizoram for its earlier initiatives, but emphasized that government departments must go further—engaging landowners, local councils, and the public to ensure widespread tree planting and environmental protection. He highlighted the importance of planting fodder and fruit-bearing trees to improve soil quality and livelihoods. Noting that heavy rains in upland areas can lead to flooding in Lawngtlai town, he urged everyone to participate in extensive tree-planting on hillsides to stabilize slopes. Given the risks of erosion and sedimentation, he instructed all departments and local residents to collaborate in planting as many trees as possible.

Several speakers then addressed the importance of Green Mizoram Day and announced the district-level events. The official Green Mizoram Day ceremony will begin at 10:30 AM on June 11 in the courtyard of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. The event will be inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Mr. Siva Gopal Reddy, with Mr. K. Lalthanzara, Executive Secretary of LADC, presiding as Chairman. During the ceremony, Mr. K. Lalromawia, Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests (DCCF) and Member Secretary of the Lawngtlai District Level Committee on Green Mizoram, will lead the public pledge. As part of the day’s activities, government departments will plant a total of 390 trees along NH-02, from Saikah to Chawntlangpui.

At the state level, “Mesua ferrea” (locally known as Kauhsing) has been designated as Mizoram’s State Tree by the State Level Sub-Committee on Green Mizoram. The Environment, Forest & Climate Change Department and LADC will oversee the tree-planting program. In the first year, planting will take place twice annually—in February and again in November. Moving forward, each Green Mizoram Day celebration will also feature the “Village Level Fire Prevention Award 2025,” to recognize villages that demonstrate effective fire‐prevention practices.

During today’s district meeting, Mr. K. Lalromawia, DCCF, LADC, offered words of encouragement to committee members. It was announced that Green Mizoram Day will be observed every year on June 11. This year’s theme is “Plant Trees and Catch the Rain.”
