Citizens’ Assistance is the Top Priority; All Systems on 24-Hour Alert Mode – Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Mumbai : The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, and the State Disaster Management Department, Mumbai Municipal Corporation, and Railway Administration are working together to provide relief to Mumbaikars. Since last night, Mumbai has received a significant amount of rainfall, ranging from 267 to 300 millimeters. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured that top priority is being given to assist citizens, with all systems on 24-hour alert mode.

By visiting the State Disaster Control Room at the Ministry, Chief Minister Mr. Shinde, along with visiting the control room of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, reviewed the situation in Mumbai. During this time, Mumbai City Guardian Minister Deepak Kesarkar, Mumbai Suburban District Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Rural Development Minister Girish Mahajan, Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, Chief Minister’s Additional Chief Secretary Dr. I.S. Chahal, and Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani were present.

During this visit, the Chief Minister gathered information about the rainfall in various parts of Mumbai from the control room and reviewed the situation on highways, railways, and major roads. After this inspection, the Chief Minister addressed the media.

Chief Minister Mr. Shinde said, “Normally, a rainfall of 65 millimeters in Mumbai creates a situation of heavy rainfall. However, since last night, there has been 267 to 300 millimeters of rain. Due to such a large amount of rainfall, water has accumulated on railway tracks and in areas like Chunabhatti and Sion. To ensure the immediate drainage of the accumulated water, the railways and the Mumbai Municipal Corporation have installed pumps.”

Due to such heavy rainfall at once, efforts are being made to enhance the drainage capacity. The Chief Minister mentioned that thanks to the holding ponds created by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, areas like Milan Subway and Hindmata have not experienced waterlogging this year. He noted that the micro-tunneling experiment, conducted for the first time in the country, has been helpful in facilitating drainage.

The Chief Minister said that since morning, he had been in contact with the railway authorities, Mumbai Municipal Corporation, State Disaster Control Room, and Mumbai Police Commissioner to gather information about the situation. He mentioned that approximately 5,000 locations in Mumbai are being monitored from the Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s control room, with officers on the ground. Flood gates are being installed at the Mithi River to prevent seawater from entering the city during high tide. He added that a system has been set up to pump the accumulated water into the river. Seven pumping stations are being established in Mumbai, and all systems are ready to assist the citizens.
