Peanut Cultivation Becomes a Profitable Option for Farmers in the Summer Season

Farmers in Jashpur Earn Higher Profits by Growing Peanuts Instead of Paddy During Summer

Raipur : Farmers in Jashpur district are now turning to summer crops to earn additional income from farming, significantly improving their standard of living. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, the Government of Chhattisgarh is successfully delivering the benefits of its schemes to farmers living in remote areas.

In this context, under the National Food Security Mission (Oilseeds) scheme, farmer Shri Gurunarayan, a resident of Durgapara village in Bagicha block of Jashpur district, was encouraged to grow summer peanuts instead of traditional paddy. The Agriculture Department provided him with 20 kilograms of peanut seeds free of cost.

Farmer Gurunarayan shared that he owns a total of 3.303 hectares of land, which he previously used for paddy cultivation during both the Kharif and Rabi seasons. He explained that paddy requires a lot of water, and the yield was often unsatisfactory, resulting in high input costs and limited profits.

After consulting with the local Rural Agriculture Extension Officer, Mr. Ravi Roshan Toppo, Gurunarayan decided to switch from paddy to peanut cultivation. He planted peanuts on 0.200 hectares of land. In addition to seeds, the department also provided him with micronutrients, fertilizers, pesticides, and technical guidance.

He reported that due to regular monitoring and timely expert advice, his crop is in excellent condition. He also expressed optimism about earning better income, given the favorable market prices for peanuts at present.

This initiative clearly demonstrates that with planned efforts, proper guidance, and the adoption of scientific agricultural practices, farmers can earn profits even in the summer season. It also shows that farmers can move beyond traditional farming methods and embrace innovation in agriculture.
