Moscow: Russia Agrees to Release Indian Nationals in Military After Modi-Putin Talks

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow, Russia has agreed to discharge all Indian nationals working in its army. This decision followed discussions between PM Modi and President Vladimir Putin.

At least two Indian citizens have lost their lives while fighting in Russia’s conflict against Ukraine, with many others claiming they were deceived into joining the combat.

Sources revealed that PM Modi raised the issue during a private dinner hosted by President Putin on Monday night. In response, Russia consented to discharge all Indians serving in their military and to assist with their return.

Last week, a top Indian official stated that Modi’s priorities in Moscow included addressing India’s trade imbalance with Russia and securing the release of Indian citizens “misled” into fighting in the Ukraine war. According to sources, India planned to strongly raise the issue of Indians recruited for the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Reports have suggested that up to 200 Indian nationals were recruited by the Russian military as support staff, such as cooks and helpers. However, sources indicated the number could be closer to 100. The frequent movement of military units and lack of proper communication have made it difficult for Indian authorities to establish contact with those believed to be on the frontlines.

The Ministry of External Affairs had previously urged Indian citizens to “exercise caution while seeking employment opportunities in Russia.”

Many Indian nationals were duped by recruiting agents based in Indian cities and Dubai into taking jobs with the Russian military. In addition to the deaths, several Indians have been injured. Some have posted videos on social media seeking help to escape such jobs.

Recently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) busted a human trafficking network operating across several states, which lured young men through social media channels and agents with promises of highly paid jobs in Russia.
