UP sees record expansion in electricity supply, connections, and substations during both terms of CM Yogi

Lucknow : Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, Uttar Pradesh has made remarkable strides in power sector reforms over the past eight years. Committed to electrifying every village and home, the state has issued over 1.78 crore new electricity connections during his tenure. Notably, under the Pradhan Mantri Saubhagya Yojana, UP issued the highest number of connections nationwide, earning a special commendation from the central government.

Electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh rose from 1.42 crore in 2017 to over 3.61 crore by March 2025. Of these, more than 3.56 crore now receive metered billing—up from just 1.08 crore in 2017.

UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) Chairman Ashish Goyal remarked, “Under CM Yogi’s leadership, fundamental reforms in the power sector have enhanced both supply and accountability. Uttar Pradesh is no longer a state of darkness, but of illumination. We haven’t just extended power lines — we’ve built a robust, reliable, and technologically advanced system. Ensuring uninterrupted power to every household remains our mission.”

Until 2017, only 1.28 lakh majras in the state had electricity. Between 2017 and March 2025, another 1.21 lakh majras were electrified, completing 100% electrification. Today, all 2,49,818 majras across the state have access to electricity — a development that has significantly improved living standards, especially for farmers in rural areas.

In 2017, line losses stood at 21.47%. By March 2025, they have dropped to 15.54%. Technical and commercial losses too have reduced from 32.80% to 16.50%. This has been made possible through transparent metering, improved line maintenance, and enhanced monitoring.

As of March 2025, average daily power supply stands at 20.06 hours in rural areas, 22.22 hours in tehsils, and a full 24 hours in district headquarters. The government aims to maintain 24-hour power in district headquarters, 21.3 hours in tehsils, and 18 hours in rural areas. This marks a sharp rise from the 2014–2017 period, when these figures were 17, 12, and 11 hours respectively.

Record expansion in substations and transmission lines

  • 33/11 KV substations: increased from 3,817 to 4,565
  • 400 KV substations: from 19 to 40
  • 220 KV substations: from 98 to 170
  • High-voltage lines: from 33,172 to 58,672 circuit kilometres

Historic rise in power demand and generation

On March 31, 2017, the state’s peak power demand was 16,110 MW. It rose to 30,618 MW on June 13, 2024, and further to a record 31,487 MW by June 2025.

Meanwhile, the generation capacity of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd has increased from 4,839 MW in 2014 to 7,800 MW by March 2025. UPPCL Chairman Dr. Ashish Kumar Goyal affirmed that with the Chief Minister’s visionary leadership, the energy sector in Uttar Pradesh is poised for even greater performance in the future.
