“Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan 6.0 to Be Implemented in Local Self-Government Bodies” – Environment and Climate Change Minister Pankaja Munde
Mumbai – In a significant step towards environmental preservation and climate action, the Maharashtra State Government’s Environment and Climate Change Department will implement the sixth phase of its flagship initiative Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan (My Earth Campaign) from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, across local self-government bodies, announced Environment and Climate Change Minister Pankaja Munde.
The campaign focuses on raising public awareness about environmental challenges and climate change by aligning actions with the five elements of nature – Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Sky. It seeks to consolidate various government schemes, programs, and measures related to environmental protection and channel them through local governance bodies using a mission-mode approach. A guiding framework or toolkit has been developed to assist in the campaign’s implementation. So far, five successful phases of the campaign have already been executed.
Campaign to Reach 28,317 Local Bodies Across Maharashtra
The sixth phase of the campaign will target 28,317 local self-governance bodies, including 422 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and 27,895 Gram Panchayats. These institutions have already registered for participation. The campaign will include competitions based on population categories to encourage active and meaningful participation. The government has invited suggestions and feedback on the draft implementation toolkit until July 15, 2025. These suggestions will be reviewed before finalizing the toolkit.
Independent Evaluation Based on the Five Elements
An independent third-party agency will assess the performance of each local body based on their contributions to preserving the five natural elements. The scoring system will be as follows:
- 15,125 points for AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) category cities
- 14,625 points for other urban local bodies
- 13,625 points for Gram Panchayats
The results will be announced on June 5, 2026 (World Environment Day), and awards will be given to the best-performing bodies.
Focus on Sustainability and Climate Goals
The sixth phase of the campaign will prioritize carbon sequestration, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and promotion of sustainable lifestyles among citizens. Local bodies are encouraged to register for participation. Minister Munde also urged Municipal Commissioners, Chief Officers, Village Development Officers, and Gram Sevaks to ensure effective implementation of Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan 6.0 within their respective jurisdictions.
This ambitious campaign aims to strengthen grassroots climate resilience and embed sustainability into everyday governance and civic life across Maharashtra.
