Iran’s Foreign Minister Heads to Moscow for Urgent Talks After US Strikes

Araghchi to meet Putin as Iran seeks support from key ally Russia following attack on nuclear sites

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on Sunday that he would soon travel to Moscow for urgent consultations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, just hours after the United States launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities.

Speaking to reporters in Istanbul, Araghchi described Iran and Russia as having a “strategic partnership,” stressing that the two nations regularly coordinate their positions on critical international issues.

Russia remains one of Iran’s closest allies. Tehran has supplied military drones to aid Russia’s war in Ukraine, while Moscow has provided technical assistance to Iran’s civilian nuclear program. Despite its alliance with Tehran, the Kremlin also maintains diplomatic ties with Israel, which had been pressuring Washington to act militarily against Iran for months.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions, with diplomatic talks on Iran’s nuclear program stalled. Russia has consistently opposed any attempt at regime change in Iran. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov recently warned that targeting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would unleash “Pandora’s box,” potentially triggering extremism and instability in the region.
