Priority Should Be Given to Resolving Citizens’ Issues Following Parliamentary Traditions – Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Mumbai, Dt. 11: Common citizens look to the Legislature as a platform to resolve their issues. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar appealed to the members of the Legislature to prioritize solving citizens’ problems by upholding the high traditions of the House and adhering to parliamentary protocols.
Vice President Dhankhar delivered a guided lecture during an event attended by Governor Ramesh Bais, Assembly Speaker Adv. Rahul Narvekar, Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Dr. Neelam Gorhe, and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve, along with Cabinet members and legislators, were also present.
Vice President Dhankhar emphasized that India has a glorious tradition of parliamentary democracy, viewed as the largest democracy in the world. This significantly increases the responsibility of Parliament and Legislature members. He stressed that much depends on how the Houses meet the expectations of the common citizens. To address any differences of opinion among political parties, there is a need for mutual dialogue, he said.
Dhankhar highlighted the importance of maintaining high democratic traditions and moral values. He urged all believers in parliamentary democracy to adhere to these values, reflected in their behavior in the House. He noted that everyone outside the hall focuses on the happenings within, and thus, every member and political party should observe ethical and serious conduct. All elements present in the hall are important, he mentioned.
Vice President Dhankhar also expressed his displeasure with the frequent disruptions, sloganeering, and obstruction of speech in the Parliament and state legislatures, stressing the need for maintaining decorum and respect within these institutions.
Maharashtra, with its rich history and heritage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, serves as an inspiration to others, said Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. The state has been known for its agriculture, administration, and sense of responsibility since the rule of Shivaji Maharaj, he added.
“Our country is progressing, and the roles of the legislature, judiciary, and administration are crucial in this journey. The legislature, in particular, plays a special role in making laws and framing development policies. Therefore, regular communication and exchange of views between these three important pillars are necessary,” Vice President Dhankhar stated.
He also spoke about the Ethics Committee of the Rajya Sabha, previously chaired by Shankarao Chavan, and the recommendations made by it. He emphasized the need to maintain the credibility of legislators and avoid discrediting their positions.
“Legislators should remember that the next generation will follow their example. This is a significant responsibility. Parliamentary customs and traditions should be upheld, and while representatives have freedom of expression, they should maintain the honor of the presidency. Politicians play a crucial role as our country progresses towards becoming a developed nation,” Vice President Dhankhar added.
Governor Ramesh Bais highlighted that the Maharashtra Legislative Council is the most prestigious in the country, producing many eminent representatives. Maharashtra has significantly contributed to making the state progressive. He noted that the country’s first woman President, Pratibha Patil, represented this House. The legislature reflects the hopes and aspirations of farmers, women, and youth, and there is a need to be more sensitive to youth issues. Efforts should be made to strengthen the faith of these groups in democracy, with a particular focus on women, the environment, climate change, and farmer issues.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized that the Maharashtra Legislature has a glorious tradition, with many leaders playing a significant role in the nation’s development. “The Vice President’s guidance on parliamentary democracy is invaluable. His experience and knowledge have enhanced the prestige of the Vice President’s office,” he concluded.
Assembly Speaker Adv. Rahul Narvekar said in his welcome address that he will fully contribute to the protection of parliamentary democracy, while Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council Dr. Neelam Gorhe expressed her gratitude. On this occasion, he provided information about the various activities and programs organized as part of the Legislative Council Centenary Festival.
