Yogi govt’s Marriage Grant Scheme transforms lives of thousands of Divyang couples

Lucknow : The Yogi government’s model of social justice and inclusive development places the welfare of the Divyangjan at its core. Beyond financial aid, the focus is on fostering respect, self-reliance, and dignity for this vulnerable section of society. A flagship initiative in this effort is the ‘Marriage Grant Scheme’, which has already received over 74,000 applications in FY 2025–26. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure prompt processing so that every eligible beneficiary receives timely support.

This flagship scheme is not merely a financial aid program; it is a genuine effort to restore the social dignity of Persons with Disabilities. The financial support provided on the occasion of marriage enhances their self-esteem and helps them begin a new chapter in life with confidence. The initiative is setting a new benchmark for inclusivity and empowerment in Uttar Pradesh. Under the scheme, Rs 15,000 is provided if the groom is a Divyang, Rs 20,000 if the bride is a Divyang, and Rs 35,000 if both partners are Divyang.

The assistance is directly transferred to beneficiaries’ bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring transparency, efficiency, and eliminating the role of intermediaries. In FY 2024–25, the government had allocated a budget of Rs 2.64 crore for the scheme, of which Rs 1.92 crore was utilized to benefit 819 Divyang couples.

To increase accessibility and outreach, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities has simplified the application process through an online portal, and is running awareness campaigns in both urban and rural areas. Special guidelines have also been issued to facilitate the swift verification and processing of the increasing number of applications.

Furthermore, the Yogi government has implemented several other initiatives aimed at empowering persons with disabilities. Minister for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Narendra Kashyap, stated, “Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath envisions a society where every Divyangjan is treated with respect and given equal opportunities. The Marriage Grant Scheme is a transformative step in that direction, empowering couples both economically and socially. With a target to process over 74,000 applications this year, we are ensuring that no eligible beneficiary is left behind. Through a fully digital and transparent process, we are making sure that the benefits reach the right hands, at the right time.”
