Arthunkal Police station in Kerala bags ISO certification.

For the first time in India, a police station in Kerala has been awarded ISO certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), a body under the Central Government. This is the first instance when a national agency is certifying a police station based on the quality of its services

It is the Arthunkal Police Station in Cherthala, Alappuzha, which has been recognised with the BIS accreditation in recognition of its operational excellence.

The station was evaluated and selected for this honour based on several criteria, including maintenance of law and order, efficiency in crime investigation, quality of operations, prompt grievance redressal, infrastructure, cleanliness, adherence to green protocols, accuracy in record-keeping, officer conduct, and the effective use of modern systems in daily operations.

As a part of its community policing efforts, the station has maintained continuous engagement with educational institutions and commercial establishments within its jurisdiction. It has also conducted awareness classes on cybercrime and drug abuse for nearly 10,000 students and parents. These initiatives were part of the Modernised Cherthala Police Programme, launched under the leadership of Cherthala ASP Harish Jain.

At a function held at the Arthunkal Police Station, the ISO certificate was jointly received by SHO P.G. Madhu and Sub-Inspector D. Sajeev Kumar from BIS South Zone representative Praveen Khanna.

Interestingly, this major recognition for Kerala Police comes at a politically sensitive juncture, as opposition parties—the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), and the BJP have raised serious concerns about the deteriorating law & order conditions in the state. Even the Kerala Police’s role in the wide spread shutdown on Wednesday have attracted criticisms.
