Excise Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar Meets Excise Officers & Vaivakawn Siamtha Group To Strengthen Anti-Drug Efforts

Aizawl – Today at 2:00 PM, Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, Minister of State for Excise & Narcotics, convened a meeting at the MINECO Office with senior officials from the Excise & Narcotics Department and members of the Vaivakawn Siamtha Pawl (Vaivakawn Reform Group). The meeting focused on strengthening community and department coordination to curb the growing drug problem in and around Vaivakawn.

According to reports from the Vaivakawn Siamtha Pawl, drug users from various parts of Aizawl and even from outside the city frequently converge in Vaivakawn. At peak times, this number can exceed 200 individuals, often occupying unsafe and inappropriate public and private spaces such as churches, Anganwadi centres, YMA properties, and private homes. Due to the supply provided by multiple dealers, the group emphasized the need for preemptive awareness campaigns and timely intelligence sharing to disrupt these networks.

Excise & Narcotics Commissioner Pu Z. Lalhmangaiha, speaking at the meeting, revealed that around 80% of identified drug users live within Aizawl but frequent Vaivakawn and its surrounding areas due to easier access. Of these users, 60% are reportedly linked to the TBCC area, while 5% are from the Hulhliap Project, with the rest coming from other localities. The Department has mobilized mobile duty units to monitor hotspots across Aizawl.

In his remarks, Excise Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar stated:
“The growing influx of drug users into our state is deeply concerning. Locations like Vaivakawn and Rangvamual have unfortunately become hubs, drawing people from across Mizoram due to easy access. The so-called ‘A Senchi Lane’ has become widely known, and that is a serious issue. We aim to stop these spaces from being used for such activities and intend to work closely with local communities.”

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with local leaders and the Vaivakawn Siamtha Pawl to combat the issue.

During the meeting, participants stressed that the increasing concentration of drug users and alcohol abusers is creating unsafe conditions for women and the general community. The Department and the reform group resolved to intensify efforts to ensure safer environments. As an initial step, the Minister contributed ₹2 lakh in support of the Vaivakawn Siamtha Pawl’s initiatives.

Also in attendance were senior officers from the Excise & Narcotics Department led by Commissioner Pu Z. Lalhmangaiha, and community leaders from Vaivakawn locality.
