Udhayanidhi Stalin Allocates New Homes to 159 Displaced Families in Chennai’s Basin Bridge Area

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Fulfils Rehabilitation Promise for Rain-Affected Families Under State’s Urban Habitat Development Scheme

Chennai : Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin today (18.07.2025) issued housing allotment orders to 159 families residing in the Basin Bridge Toll Depot area under the jurisdiction of the Greater Chennai Corporation. The allotments were made under the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board’s resettlement scheme, during a special function held at his camp office.

The Deputy Chief Minister’s intervention follows his earlier visit during the 2024 monsoon season, when he witnessed the devastating impact of floodwaters on this low-lying settlement. The area, prone to severe waterlogging, had become uninhabitable, prompting a state-led commitment to relocate residents to safer housing.

The 159 beneficiary families have lived in the Basin Bridge Toll Depot locality for nearly 75 years, many engaged in informal trade and services. Their homes were built on 60,000 sq. ft. of land owned by the Greater Chennai Corporation. Year after year, during the monsoon season, these families endured flooding that caused immense hardship and health hazards.

Following the Deputy Chief Minister’s assurance in 2024, the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board identified suitable housing units and prepared the necessary documentation for resettlement. The housing is being provided at the Board’s developments in Perumbakkam, a modern residential zone equipped with essential infrastructure and amenities.

During today’s event, Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin handed over the official housing allotment documents to the 159 families, fulfilling the government’s promise and ensuring improved living conditions for the beneficiaries.

The event was also attended by Minister for Municipal Administration Thiru K.N. Nehru, Minister for MSME Thiru T.M. Anbarasan, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Thiru P.K. Sekarbabu, Chennai Mayor Thirumathi R. Priya, local MLAs Thiru R.T. Bharath and Thiru R. Moorthy, and Additional Chief Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Thirumathi Kakarla Usha, IAS.

Also present were Deputy Mayor Thiru M. Mahesh Kumar, Commissioner Thiru S. Kumaragurubaran, IAS, Parliamentary party leader Thiru N. Ramalingam, City Welfare Committee head Thiru T. Ilaya Aruna, TNUHDB Managing Director Thirumathi Supriya P. Singh, IAS, Project Director Thiru Katta Ravi Satya, IAS, Joint Managing Director Thirumathi N. Priya Ravichandran, IAS, MLA Thirumathi P.
