A Lifeline for the Needy: Chief Minister’s Medical Assistance Cell Proves a Boon for Poor Patients
The Chief Minister’s Medical Assistance Cell has become a lifeline for economically disadvantaged citizens of Maharashtra suffering from critical illnesses. Particularly in the Vidarbha region, this initiative, operated from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat at Hyderabad House, Nagpur, has made significant contributions by providing financial aid for medical treatments. Between January 2017 and June 2025, this cell has extended financial support totaling ₹99.46 crore to 11,849 patients.
Conceived by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the assistance cell at Hyderabad House was established in 2015 to eliminate the inconvenience faced by patients’ families, who previously had to travel to Mumbai to submit applications for aid. Since becoming operational, the cell has served patients from all districts of Nagpur and Amravati divisions, offering comprehensive support for treatment of serious and life-threatening illnesses.
Financial Assistance from 2017 to 2025
From January 2017 to June 2025, the CM Medical Assistance Cell at Hyderabad House has sanctioned a total of ₹99,46,94,041 to 11,849 patients. In its initial phase (Jan–Mar 2017), 332 patients received ₹3.23 crore. Over subsequent financial years:
- FY 2017–18: ₹19.05 crore to 1,776 patients
- FY 2018–19: ₹20.01 crore to 2,099 patients
- Till Nov 7, 2019: ₹7.04 crore to 971 patients
- Dec 31, 2019–Mar 2020: ₹1.06 crore to 283 patients
- FY 2020–21: ₹2.38 crore to 549 patients
- FY 2021–22: ₹2.27 crore to 482 patients
- FY 2022–23: ₹5.64 crore to 836 patients
- FY 2023–24: ₹16.33 crore to 2,005 patients
- FY 2024–25: ₹17.80 crore to 2,082 patients
- Apr–Jun 2025: ₹4.61 crore to 534 patients
About the Scheme
This ambitious welfare initiative, implemented under the leadership of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, aims to provide financial assistance for medical treatment to needy and eligible residents across the state.
Eligibility Criteria
To avail benefits:
- The applicant must be a resident of Maharashtra
- Annual family income must not exceed ₹1.6 lakh
- Patient must possess a ration card and Aadhaar card
- The hospital must be located in Maharashtra and registered with the CM Medical Assistance Fund system
Illnesses Covered
The scheme provides assistance for treatment of specified ailments such as:
- Cochlear implants (for children under 3)
- Organ transplants – heart, liver, kidney, lung, bone marrow, and hands
- Cancer treatments
- Accident injuries
- Surgeries for infants and children
- Neurological and cardiac conditions
- Hip/knee replacements
- Burn injuries
- Electric shock injuries
- Dialysis, chemotherapy, and radiation
- Neonatal complications
- Orthopedic and fracture-related treatments
Required Documents
To apply for financial assistance, applicants must submit:
- Duly filled application form
- Original cost estimate for treatment
- Doctor’s signature and hospital seal (attested by District Civil Surgeon if a private hospital)
- Income certificate from Tehsildar (below ₹1.6 lakh)
- Patient’s Aadhaar card (or mother’s Aadhaar for newborns)
- Ration card
- Relevant medical investigation reports
- Passport-size photo of the patient
- ZTCC/government committee approval for organ transplants
- FIR copy for road accident cases

Hospital Requirements
To receive aid, the treating hospital must be registered with the CM’s Fund System. If the hospital is covered under health schemes like Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, or charitable hospital schemes, treatment must first be provided under these schemes. If the condition is not covered, a non-coverage certificate must be submitted along with the cost estimate.
Maximum Financial Assistance
Depending on the disease and treatment type, and based on medical reports, the executive committee may sanction up to ₹2 lakh for organ transplant cases such as heart, liver, kidney, lung, and bone marrow transplants.
This initiative by the Chief Minister’s Office has brought great relief to the needy, especially in times of medical crises.
